A bit of a change from the usual "NVidia does not support older cards in the drivers" headlines.:)

On the face of it says right at the end of paragraph 2 that a patch change lists says from GCN 1.1 and above support makes me think this is a game issue not AMD.

Like a lot of stuff in the news I don't think we should take the OP too seriously, AOTS is just one game.

Oh didn't see that coming, as you say it makes a change to see AMD in an older hardware not working so well thread.

Ah, I see that also includes the most of the currant 400 series, which is a bit surprising.

R5 430
R5 435

R7 430
R7 435
R7 450

All of which are OEM GCN 1.0 parts, which only leaves the

R7 455 GCN 2.0

RX 460
RX 470
RX 480 which are all GCN 4.0

Interesting all the same.

The thread title is misleading at best as it’s the game that’s removed support for < GNC 1.1.

If you read carefully the game still has support for it as older drivers still work.

What this means as regard to newer drivers I don't know.

I don't get this at all.

AMD, on its part, is pointing users to a patch change-list from the developers of "Ashes..." which reads that the game supports DirectX 12 async-compute only on GCN 1.1 (eg: Radeon R9 290) and above.

The article says about a patch list change from the Ashes development team and then links to a quote about Rise of the tomb raider.
So is it just the one game or is it an AMD DX12 thing?

Very confusing.

The article is talking about one thing.

It then links to a post where multiple games are being mentioned.

The reply is that its on the game developers for it not working.

FYI
The affected GCN1.0 cards are the 7700+, and their re-bagged siblings like the 280/270. These are ancient ones, supporting only DX12 in 11_1 level.

Unaffected are the later ones,
GCN 1.1, which includes 7790, 7970/7950, Rx 260/260X, Rx 290/290X, R9 295X2, Rx 360, Rx 390/390X, Rx 455 Series

Yup mostly older cards, except as listed above there is more of the currant 400 series cards that are affected rather than cards that are not.

With that story, is Techpowerup trying to become the next Daily Fail / Daily Express? lol.

The 280 is a 7950, the 280x a 7970. It sounds like the only unaffected older gen cards are the ones that have freesync compatibility, ie the oldest are the 260, 260x, 290, 290x and 295x2, All the other 200 series cards including the 265 are rebadged 7000 series models. The 370 is a rebadged 265/7850 so that may also be affected.

The thing is though, it's an AMD driver update that has disabled AC in AtoS for GCN 1.0 cards, not a game patch. Reverting to the older drivers restores full AC functionality and gaming performance on GCN 1.0 cards.

Surely if it has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with a driver update AMD can't blame game devs :S

I see a lot of misunderstand since i post my finding.

In a first place, i started to search why GCN 1.0 was not supported in Rise Of The Tomb Raider last patch.

When Maxwell was accused to not support Async Compute, someone create a program for testing Async Compute. It worked on GCN 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 back in time.

So i just wanted to verify if that still the case and that how i find that Async Compute was disabled on news drivers. Then i post on Reddit.

After that, many ask me to test a game that support Async Compute on GCN 1.0. So i tried Ashes Of Singularity. You know the end. That just confirm that Async Compute was disabled on news drivers. Old drivers performs way better because of Async Compute.
