AMD declining R&D budget....

Not at all.

R.I.P. AMD.

The fact that they've released diddly squat in about 1.5 years has probably saved them a lot in R&D budget but they can't stand still forever.

R & D means nothing if the forth coming products are good. Lets just hope this is the case. Many smaller companies can challenge the giants on smaller budgets if they work smart enough. Having more money to work with does help but you only need to look at the past with AMD cpu's being better than the giant Intel Pentiums for a period of time. It's all about the product's on our end and i don't care much about who spends what.

If you actually read the full article, AMD were and are able to offset R&D costs on a lot of things to the customer themselves, hence the reduction in certain R&D costs. I wasnt aware of this i must say, obviously they still have reduced in all areas which arguably isnt good though.

Fortunately, one of AMD’s high-growth businesses includes "R&D" that is not incorporated into its R&D investments category.

Not really a total view of the company, although not encouraging its not new info. (As with everything else with amd)

It is strange though for AMD to be quiet for so long and not counter nvidia.
Samsung takeover in the offing anyone ? :)

The Author appears to have money invested in AMD and all his recent posts seem to try and put a positive spin on any bad news for the company.

Hmmm...

The R&D for other customers doesn't directly increase the general R&D.

What AMD is quite good at now form a business perspective is custom chips/hardware.solutions. This requires R&D which is charged to the customer, but that custom solution likely has no improvement for other devices, say CPUs and GPUs. And even if there was there could be difficult licensing arrangements.

It looks like they are finally putting the 20nm shrinks in the consoles now, nabbed a few extra customers, semi-custom biz looks good. They should also be shopping for chips for the PS5/Xbone Two before long, wonder what AMD will be looking to sell. Hopefully Zen and not Carrizo or some bilge.

High revenue, low profit. That will keep them alive but wont let them flourish.
the Chinese console market is an untapped opportunity, and its opening should significantly spur global game console sales in the future. If consoles gain popularity among Chinese gamers, and are able to capture even 10% of the gaming population in the country (that is, 10% of 500 million gamers), it will still be a significant jump from the current level. AMD will benefit from higher revenues from console sales without increasing its R&D or marketing costs
