So recently i bought a ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB

Now when i play games they will play fine for so long not choppy or jerky at all but i get an error message saying the amd display driver has stopped responding

I have made sure that all drivers are up to date and that the previous graphics card drivers have been removed from the system.

Anybody have any ideas about this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

I have exactly the same issue with my 6870.

Are you on windows 7? I had a quick look on the web last night,

Try setting the power management in windows to maximum performance across the board, especially the pci-e section.

Try adjusting the gpu card to idle at ahigher frequency

There is a registery setting in Windows that tells windows to reload the driver if it thinks it has failed or become non responsive.

1.Click Start, Run, and type "regedit"
2.Navigate to: HKey Local Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\
3.Locate the "GraphicsDrivers" key, and right-click on it.
4.Click "New" and "DWORD Value" (it will say 32-bit if you are on a Windows 64-bit)
5.Label the new value "TdrDelay"
6.Double click on TdrDelay, and enter the number of seconds you want Windows to wait before timing out. The default is two seconds, so start out with 6, and you can make it a few seconds longer if it doesn't fix the issue.
7.Close the registry editor and reboot the computer.

I havent had a chance to try this on my machine as yet as it now wont boot but these are what im going to try!

Doesnt seem to make a difference

Ok the rest of the system specs are

AMD Phenom II x4 2.8
6 Ram
PSU- Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 650W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

I have not really changed the voltages and core speeds as i am not entirely sure how to excuse the noobyness :P

Going to give it a couple days and see if anybody has a solution , hope that it doesnt come to RMA
Thanks every1 whos attempted at a solution so far :)

Just managed to get my machine going again!!! It happened within about 5 mins.

After reboot I changed colour settings to 16 bit, removed some on board power managment rubbish that came with the mobo and changed windows power settings to Full.

The only other thing I have done is set my 1090t to 3.7Ghz simply by using the onboard OC feature on the IV board.

I have watched a few flash movies and have now had the system running for the longest it ever has without crashing. Now installing a game to see how that goes.

Thanks

Keep me updated :)
i can now run movies and most games however the moment i crack the graphics up all hell breaks loose with the driver stopping

Installed Black OPs a whle ago but fails as soon as it gets past the intro everytime. Will try someother things tomoroow.

You say you can play games now and watch movies. What helped the most?

Reset the card to default settings, reinstalled the drivers, made sure all other drivers were up to date.
just the basics really but seems to have got it at least working enough to play some games and play movies however would really like to get it working properly as right now it is playing games only slightly better than my previous card, otherwords waste of 120 odd quid on the card if there isnt a fix. And still the crashes as soon as pump the graphics up

Well after reading all of this i am not sure whether RMA is the best option, seems to me that if it is a problem with something else then sending the card off is going to be a waste of time and money for it to come back working perfectly on the testers machine. Or am i just being daft?

I have not found any other solution yet but to be honest i have a fair bit of uni work to do at the moment so dont want to mess around too much as i need my comp for that. Will try and find a few other things to try tonight.

Let me know how u guys get on

Im afraid i dont have another pc :/
Could try and dig out an xp disc i guess and see but will take a good adventure into the spare room to find one haha....

slowly started creeping up the graphics on BF 2 last night and it was only when i cracked the AA up that it crashed. Think this could be the root of the problem? :S
