Just got an X2 3800+, and I'm trying to get my head straight about the driver.

First off, does anyone actually know if the driver is necessary? If so, what function does it serve?
- I know it's needed for C&Q, but that's irrelevant to me as I'll be o/cing (and soon!)
- I know it adds the /PMTimer switch to the XP startup, which is apparently important for dual core. But I've also seen people saying that this causes problems itself?

Anyway apart from all that, what can the Romans, I mean the AMD cpu driver, do for my system?

And has anybody deliberately not installed it, or is it just a no-brainer?

I don't understand why'd you question installing it.

My policy is always if something isn't needed, don't install it.

If this driver is purely for C&Q then it serves no purpose on my system. If it has another purpose then fair enough, I'll take it.

So, does anyone know if it has another purpose besides C&Q?

hmm... after a good Googling session I've decided to skip the drivers for now.

I'm running with C&Q disabled in the bios, and it seems to me a lot of people with a similar config are running fine without the drivers and without further tweaks.

Those who are having problems - even without C&Q - sometimes report that the drivers help, but I suspect that this is because the installer adds /usepmtimer to boot.ini, rather than being something in the drivers themselves.

The following link seems to sum up the steps available if problems do occur:
