AMD Driver query?

Hey guys,

I am toying with getting an AMD GPU, my last AMD desktop GPU was the 7970 & the W5700 but one thing I've always had issues with, whether it's desktop or laptop is the AMD drivers crashing, a common one I seem to experience is that when I try to open up the AMD adrenaline interference, I used to get this error:

The version of AMD Software that you have launched is not compatible with your currently installed AMD graphics driver

Removing and reinstalling the drivers used to help for a bit but it would happen again and again.

Is this something that still happens?

I don't want to make this thread into a fanboy meltdown, I'm just trying to get some sensible answers from ones that are using AMD GPUs currently, positive and negative experiences welcome, so I can make an informed decision.

Is this something that still happens?

The only time that has happened to me is when Windows forcibly updated the driver through Windows update due to a new feature version (I believe it was 24H2). I had driver updates disabled, but Windows did it anyway and the launcher was left the old version.

No issues here. Went from a 3080 to a 9070XT. Other than the system tray icon I can’t tell the difference. Nvidia drivers tend to be worse now though. Oh how the turn tables.

I had something similar with my daughter’s laptop to what Tetris had. Windows update kept downgrading the driver. Causing this error message. Asus where no help and I had to block driver updates to fix it.

No issues here either, I went from a RTX3070 to my current 7900GRE and have never had any issues with AMD drivers.

From a desktop perspective I have had no problems since the vega 64

Not had any issues worth commuting to memory with adrenaline but I’ve a mate had untold issues a couple of years back with a laptop - what’s mentioned in the op sounds somewhat similar. At the time neither he nor I could find anything worthwhile online about the issue so I think it ended up with the laptop being binned off for gaming - possibly one of those rare almost unique hardware/software issues that crop up.

I’d certainly not be put off an amd gpu by the software.

That’s my own thinking on it. If it was common I’d have expected to have found more about the issue at the time we looked into it.
Adrenaline and whatever it’s predecessor was called (can’t for the life of me remember now) have had the odd hiccup here and there but overall they’ve been pretty solid, certainly in the past 5 years or so. Honestly, don’t be put off by their software package. Unless you’re running some weird, niche hardware combo I’d bet good money you’ll be fine.

Edit: Catalyst Control Centre - that was the predecessors name. I think

Not really had any issues with modern AMD drivers (on either Windows or Linux) but the issue noted is generally caused by Windows being its normal "helpful" (read completely useless) self and updating the drivers even though you didn't want or ask it to.

From memory you need to set the "Device Installation Settings" to No. This should prevent the above from happening.
