AMD Driver Timeout error. Help, Please?

Hi,

I've just fitted a brand new Gigabyte Radeon rx 6800xt in my pc.

I'm getting an error message consistently which reads:

AMD Bug Report Tool says "We detected a driver timeout has occured on your system"

Tonight, for the first time I got "D3D device was removed due to DXGI_Error_Device_reset. This usually indicates a driver bug or gpu hardware failing/overheating"

It worked fine for the first 2 or 3 hours. Now I constantly get this AMD Driver Timeout error message when

a) I try to start a game. (I've tried it with Project Cars 2 and Automobilista 2)

or

b) I try to Link my Quest 2 to Desktop. It sometimes gets as far as connecting to desktop then desktop disappears from the Quest headset and it drops back to the menus within the Quest 2.

I've done a few searches on google but failed to find a solution.

I've also ran DDU (Display Driver Uninstall) and Amds' own clean driver removal tool.
Re-installed AMD drivers from fresh download. (Twice)

According to HW Monitor my gpu temps have never been higher than 70 degrees. But i've also had the fault regularly on lower temps around 50 to 60 degrees.

I've a mains power meter on the input mains lead to the psu. It usually doesn't show anything higher that 320watts power consumption for the whole pc. (It did show 420 watts when I managed to run a couple of games though)

Rig is
Ryzen 5 3600 cpu
Msi b550 a pro motherboard
16g ram
650w Corsair psu.

The system worked fine before with my RX 560 gpu.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, please.

Thank you in advance.

Edit: I should add I've only seen it show this error when doing the above. Internet browsing etc seems ok.

Could be ur 650w psu. I have a 620w psu and feel im pushing it with having a 6700xt, if i got a 6800xt i would have probably wanted a bit higher capacity psu myself.

Failing that, it could be a windows update thats needed, ur amd chipset drivers might have been removed cos pf ddu. It could be needing a bios update possibly or if sam is enabled try turning it off? If you oc stuff try stock first to see if it helps. Is ur boot drive ok i.e no corrupted sectors? Do you use ICUE software if so it might cause conflicts, ive heard it affecting gpus. Which drivers do you try and have you tried driver only installs instead of full or min?

Thanks folks..

I replaced the psu with a brand new gold 850w psu. Same issue.
I was also getting artefacts (Little brown dancing spots in the middle of the fov) but only in VR.

I've now returned the GPU. Shame really. It was a great price. But if it wasn't going to work then maybe not that much of a bargain.

Anyhow, my rtx 3060 is behaving fine. It is my hope eventually to get a 3080 when/if the prices drop.

As mentioned you need to rule out the psu, I'd go for at least a 750 (preferably an 850) I'd also avoid Corsair but that's due to personal experience. For a PC upgrade I grabbed a Vega 64 & after a little testing I realised my 2 month old EVGA 650 PSU wasn't up to the task so I grabbed a Corsair HX850, With the HX there was horrendous coil whine unlike with the underpowered EVGA G2 so that went back & I spent a little extra to get an 860watt Seasonic model. It's been plain sailing since then. However if it was a local buy you need to act quickly so you can rule out the card being faulty so if it is you can return it for a full refund.

Beat to the punch.

I've been getting this on and off with my Vega 56 for 2 years. You definitely made the best decision sending it back. :D
