AMD driver wrecked my rig, help !

OK. So tonight I figured I would try 14.1 cat and see what Mantle is about. Sadly though AMD drivers have come to the rescue and wrecked my Windows install.

I went off to AMD's site and downloaded 14.1. There was a tutorial there explaining that you must remove all AMD drivers using the express uninstall first. So I ran it, and when I rebooted I have no USB at all, so no keyboard, no mouse and no devices.

As if this wasn't bad enough I don't have them before Windows loads, either. They have been completely wiped.

I don't have a PS2 keyboard so I'm really perplexed as to what to do. Going nuclear is not an option as I have files on the drive I can't lose.
 
What's your system specs? If you have an AMD CPU then things such as USB drivers etc might've been uninstalled as well. Perhaps try get into safe mode some how? Which version of Windows are you using?

Also perhaps use a bootable Linux disk to back up your files just in case?
 
Repair install from the Windows disc? It should load enough drivers to give you mouse/KB.

You should have just uninstalled the graphics drivers, not everything. I think you went straight into the third option "Express Uninstall all AMD software", and skipped the following warning.

What you should have done was chosen the first option "Uninstall Manager", and then you would have been given the choice to either automatically or interactively remove just the graphics software. I always find it's worth reading the menus and warnings if you're not sure what you're doing.

Did you have system restore on? should be able to rollback to before the driver uninstall from the Windows CD/recovery media. No reason to disable system restore on a modern system IMO.
 
OK..

I can't get into safe mode. Basically it's done what Driversweeper does and has completely taken out the usb drivers at a low level. All of them, USB3 included.

I've tried a repair, that did not work. I have a dual boot screen due to HyperSLI and repair wants me to reboot and do it via safe mode. The same goes for system restore from the DVD, it also wants me to reboot and do it via safe mode.

So basically I'm kinda screwed. The only option I have is to buy a PS2 keyboard.

Well, unless I can install the driver via a command line using the dvd to boot from.

I do yes. However when I boot from the dvd and try to run it it says "Please reboot and select an operating system to restore".

When you install HyperSLI it makes W8 go dual boot so you can select to boot with it running or without it. Because of this you absolutely have to do it via booting from the hard drive, not the dvd. And I can't :(

Ah well. Kinda sucks, rig will be unusable for about a week.

AMD's site has a step by step install guide for 14.1 and it says you must express uninstall all AMD drivers before installing 14.1

I have a feeling I won't be alone with this. It's just yet another AMD driver fail :mad:
 
This would never have happened on an Intel...

:p

Seriously though I can't think what to suggest, maybe try reinstalling the other AMD drivers from disc? Or from the internet?

I can't use the computer, dude. There's no USB at all even before it boots. The only time my keyboard works is before I boot, so for bios etc.

I even thought about placing the install files into the startup folder, but then remembered I would need a keyboard or mouse to go through the install.

And no, it wouldn't have happened on Intel. But then Intel do not make high end GPUs.

The only solution other than command line hacking around is a PS2 keyboard. Thankfully I have two gaming PCs, a laptop and numerous tablets/phones so I can live without my main PC for a week or so whilst I order one.
 
Take the drive out, plug it into another PC, slave it and move all your important files off it, plug it back into yours, then reinstall.

Learning point - never keep important files on your boot drive. This kind of thing has happened to me before which is why for the last 7 years I have always used a separate boot/drivers hard drive.

I went into Windows and reinstalled 13.1 cats. I rebooted - no usb. So I installed 14.1 making sure that I had the USB filter driver checked to install. Rebooted, still nothing.

In the end I managed to run system restore and that worked. So it seems this wasn't an issue my end and I did nothing wrong. The 14.1 is obviously buggy so I will just leave it for now.

Any way, all sorted :)

I think you would have needed to install the AMD Chipset & USB drivers to get them back... I'm sure the Catalyst's only contain the graphics.

This. You need to get the other drivers from your motherboard manufacturer page, the 14.1 drivers is for the GPU.
 
even if you removed the drivers,

you would be able to use usb before windows. As you said you could not. im going with usbs could be dead?

even if there not Windows should reinstall generic drivers by default for usb
