Howdy all.

Anyone brought one of these and if so what kinda of speed are you getting?

Also is £160 new, good for this type of chip as overclockers don't seem to have any opterons?

Reasonable price, i paid 230 a few months back for mine. It does 2.5GHz on stock volts and 3Ghz with just a little more.

it really depends on what stepping it is for whether it overclocks well or not.

The best ones are the CCB1E 0608 MPMW, CCBBE 0610 DPMW & CCB1E 0609 FPBW, I had 3 of the 0608 and just about got 3.0Ghz prime stable and I had one of the 0610 which was 2.9 prime stable. The 0609 FPBW are very rare and i have seen 2 hit 3.1GHz prime stable. The 0609 FPAW arnt as good.

Avoid CCBWE 0551', 0604's and any really which are CCBWE.

£160 aint bad, but there is going to be a lot of these for sale at the moment since the release of the intel Core 2 Duo. I think you may get it even cheaper.

Thanks guyz.

Yes that could be true that they may have cheaper Dual core Opterons, but that will be second hand. Trying to find brand new stock is very hard, most places if they do have stock is well expensive and most only have like 1 or 2 in stock so will keep the price high.

Thanks for the stepping info tis good to know. Will hopefuly find out what stepping I have today.

By the way what cooler did you use for air cooling. Just got myself a Artic freezer pro 64 should hopefully do the trick. :)

CCBBE 0617FPMW will be by far the best as the CCBBE is a good memory controller. They also seem to run cooler so will suit your arctic freezer :D

Just tested 165

Cheer for the information much appreciated.

Finally did some initial testing with the 165 and have got to 2.7Ghz with ease at default Vcore and running ram at 1T 1:1 Dimm 2.6

DFI LN DR SLI, Geil One TCCD 1.5 4-4-7 ram (although not running them at that speed!), 2x 6800 Ultra.

Aqua Mark at that speed 115K.

Temps are at idle 38 degrees and load for 30min 44-47 degrees. (Artic Freezer Pro 64).

Tested breifly at 2.8 on default Vcore and thats fine but I suspect ram need tweaking as Super Pi at 1M and Aqua bombs out.

Have you tried running a mem divider to see how far you can push the chip?

Started to use a divider at 2.8Ghz tried 166 and 150 so far. I suspect it just a question of tweaking the settings as DFI mboards have a ton load to mess about with.

Will let you know what results I get this eveing.

The 0617 are supposed to be the best 165 optys yet!
Where did you find these retail for that price? mail me plz.

My CCBWE 0551 VPMW which was considered a decent stepping when I got it in March manages 2.76 on 1.5v 8m PI stable.
Rather poor compared to the newer ones. If I get hold of a 0617 I can always sell this one as they are rare and seriously expensive here in sweden :)

I was offered £185 plus a PNY6600GT with fitted Zalman for my X1800XT!
Insane...

Tried to PM ya but for some odd reason says I do not have access to this page???

I tried putting a sort of link without directly referring to it as I don't want to break house rules but I think it was taken off.

PM me and I'll reply.

So far been burning in the Oppy 165 at 2.7 - 1.3 Vcore, Vdimm 2.6 1:1 no dividers. temps idle 38-40 and Load 45-48.

Played Battlefield 2 for 2hrs at 1280 x 1024 and all high levels. No problems what so ever.

Heres a question for you techies.

I got a x2 3800 and read that are suppose to be better than the 165 (debatable) the question is how come I get crashes and crap game play from the x2 3800 and have to install a load of updates and patches, yet my good old oppy I just bunged into the system booted up and away I go?

Seems to me the x2 3800 are highly overated? Haven't o/c the x2 3800 yet but may do at a later date.

Hi,

I just got an opty 165 which judging by the price, was from the same place the OP got it. It's a CCBBE 0610DPMW and it's currently sitting at 3ghz 1.52v. I don't usually bother with prime but it's superpi 32M and 3hrs of c&c zero hour stable :p . It might be able to do it at lower volts, I increased it due to instabilities though it turns out it was my memory that was letting me down. I'll try a bit lower this evening. I know it was OK at 2.93ghz 1.44v.

Temps are 34 degrees idle but a bit toasty at 52 degrees load with a gigabyte g cooler on max, but it's not bad considering I've got it in a media pc case.

Overall, I'm well chuffed with it. Going from a single core 2.6ghz 1.6v opty 146 to a dual core 3.0ghz 1.52v opty 165 was a big jump in performance and for a little over 100 pounds after I sold my old cpu. very pleased!! :D

I am very happy for you. :)

Could you explain a little more when you mention that there has been a big jump in performance...?

Cheers for the info guys ;)

Might have to pick one up - though just had my insurance renewal come in :(

Is any dual opteron worth getting as I was gonna get a 170 - but it sounds like these 165s are just as good if not better? Soz not been keeping up...

With my old cpu c&c zero hour used to drop to about 30 frames per second a few minutes into the game when it started getting hectic. Now the frame rate barely drops below 50, though it is often at the maximum 75fps. That's much bigger than I expected especially cus afaik it's a single threaded game. The prey demo, which I imagine is multi threaded, also used to often drop to 30fps but now it almost constantly remains at 60 fps. Also I can watch tv while testing for stability and other stuff, which is always useful. :p

To the guy who was asking about the 170, don't bother as they cost much more and are the same except for the multi. 165's are much cheaper and as long as you have a motherboard capable of a high fsb, you won't need the 10x multi. It would make things easier but it's not worth the extra money. Plus make sure the stepping is CCBBE or CCB1E as the CCBWE's are the same as regular athlon x2 1mb cache cpu's, which don't clock very well.

Hope it helps.
