So I'm looking to build a cheap'ish low power consumption HTPC for Blu-ray and other media, but was wondering out of the 2 which is better?

E-350 by far.

Go for the Asus E35M1-M PRO or Deluxe

Very capable of 1080p media etc.

Don't bother with Atom.

You could always pop in another plow profile GPU if your not satisfied with the HD3610 on the motherboard, which supports directx 11.

I've owned a E35M1-M Pro and was great.

Out of those choices the E-350 should be the better choice.

Intel are going to release the new Atoms soon (I think) which would be a better comparison but if you want a machine now then the E-350 would be best IMO.

i read somewhere that for htpc duties intel are better than the amd series, something to do with not being able to get clear smooth playback of certain video.

Ill try and dig out the article.

I've already ordered a E-350 but the article would be good to read since everywhere I read said they was equal but the GPU in the AMD was better

Good choice, the ION2 seems to get fairly negative reports from the MythTV / Boxee crowd regarding performance. A pity because the original ION punched well above its weight - I've been running MythTV with a Revo R3600 (Atom and ION1 chipset, 1GB RAM) for over a year now, and it handles HD DVB-S stream playback quite capably.

It's the other way round, the Intel on die GPU can't handle 23.976fps correctly and leads to an extra frame every so often. The AMD doesn't have this issue nor the ION based boards as far as I'm aware.

Have the e35m1-I deluxe and so far has not missed a beat. Played everything flawlessly through tv or pj. Mkv avi blu rays all work really well

Ps its Intel chips that can't do bluray properly.

Edit...beaten

Really glad i got the Gigabyte E-350 now, I‘ll upload some photos tomorrow when its nearly complete

sorry for late reply turns out it was a post on a forum not an article, something to do with drivers and playback software.

it just stuck in my mind i had read somewhere before about them and was sure it was an article. sorry for the misinformation.

Well I know AMD doesn't usually play nice with Linux, so it might of been about that

And its fine, no harm done :)
