My friend does a lot of encoding dvd's ect and his present system isnt really cutting it any more, so i said id build one up for him.
Thing is hes a bit of a noob and insist on wanting an AMD system even after trying to steer him towards Intel. I havnt had much involvement with AMD for a long time so am looking for ideas ..

Btw hes already got 2 x 8gb of DDR3 from his old system so basically

MOBO - MSI 970 Gaming AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
CPU - AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz
GPU - MSI GeForce GT 730 2048MB
PSU - Super Flower Golden Green HX 550W

Either a midi or micro ATX case
he did say he would need a large case due to having 3 dvd burners
but i think ive talked him into just using one in a smaller case .

Also he has no interest in OCing or gaming just the ability to encode as fast as possible. :)

Budget is £500 or under .

You'll want a motherboard with decent MOSFET cooling and a third party CPU cooler as the stock one is very loud and very rubbish

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £418.08
(includes shipping: £17.22)

I've not bothered encoding Dvds since the invention of broadband.. but can you not offload it to the GPU these days? I might be wrong on that front.

Yup, but the cost increase doesn't make it a financially viable solution. Add to that he's spec'd in 2 GPUs, no case and a frankly ridiculous 750w very average PSU makes his post a recommendation I would tend to ignore :D

What software does he use ?
Handbrake
so an 8 core it is then

Good call.

He seems to like red accents ..and i would prefer to build microATX purley cus ive not built one before :P
but yea good call on the cooler.

As for PSU .. i was hoping a 500w would be sufficient .

If you're going AMD then m-ATX isn't the way to go. The M5A78L-M (along with a lot of AM3+ m-ATX boards) has awful motherboard cooling and the 8350 is a 125w TDP part so good cooling is a must. Go ATX or don't go AMD in my opinion.

If he wants red accents then MSI or Gigabyte have them

And yes, a good quality 500w PSU will be more than sufficient.

How are the Super flower PSUs compared to a Corsair of the same price ?
Ive used Corsair for years now and never had any issues but im open to change !

Superflower are a top-tier OEM who make PSUs for other people as well as sell their own - in other words, very very good.

Corsair vary wildly as they don't make their own. They rebrand from a few other OEMs. The ones made by Seasonic can be very good.

All good then . last thing you may be able to assist with is the cpu cooler

On aircooled systems ive mostly used the Zalman range in copper which perform well and look cool but OCUK dont seem to stock them any more.
the one posted earlier seems fine and cheap but id like to give one of the AIO coolers a try , if only to give it a cleaner look.

Any thoughts on this Antec one ?

Antec H1200 Kuhler 240mm AIO Liquid Cooler= £59.99
