AMD Equivalent of Haswell i3 4130 ?

Need to spec a new build for the old man. I was going to go with an i3 4130 Haswell processor but he will be on a budget. So what is the AMD equivalent of that? What competes with the i3 and is it better/the same etc. Or put another way, what could I get from AMD with the same amount £82. I have been out of the loop with AMD for a while. Is AMD Piledriver FX the best? By the way, he would never do ANY gaming, so this is strictly a best bang per buck CPU that is as fast as possible, for as little as possible. He will be a basic user with web use and minimal apps.

Cheers guys

Tbh, I'm a little perplexed, why not just get the i3 :p?

For his uses, frankly most chips will be overkill, I'd probably just get ; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-497-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567 and try and squeeze an SSD in.

Those CPU's are incredible bank per buck, for board you could go ; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-246-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2698

And we're talking tiny money here.

Or http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-483-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2803 this would definately allow an SSD in the build, and handle web use and minimal apps, although the weakest of the lot performance wise.

On the AMD side, the FX's start off at more money ; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-339-AM&groupid=701&catid=1967&subcat=1825 but this is a better CPU than the Pent all in.

And then any AM3+ board

And an equivalent priced AMD's CPU ; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-329-AM&groupid=701&catid=1967&subcat=1944

But on the CPU side it's no where near the pentium.

Any FM2/+ board that takes your fancy.

And I can't see any Kabini stuff on OCUK, which would also be fine.

Basically, anything you buy would be fine :p, I was just perplexed about "I have budget for i3, but I'm on a budget" lol

Agreed, just pick up a Haswell Dual Core and it will be fine for gaming, better than AMD's equivalents and use much less power..

Who knows pricing, or whether it needs a higher chipset etc.
Surely being a Pentium CPU it shouldn't be as high price as an i3? :p

Apparently the reason behind the unlocked Pentium is only because of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Pentium brand...if Intel going to charge it as much as an i3, then they would be seriously trolling :D

The price difference between the Pentium and i3 would probably be enough for getting a motherboard with chipset that support overclocking instead of one that don't and somewhat making it more future-proof as well (i.e. dropping an i5/i7 K CPU onto it in the future).

They could price it near i3 level due to the fact it can overclock.

Who knows really.
But I look forward till the unlocked i3 in 15/16? years :p

If it's never going to do any gaming get a Pentium G3220 or G3420. They are unbeatable value for the money. I built a pc for the sister in law last month using a G3220 and Asrock H81 HDS and both together only cost £72. Last week i built one for the wife using a G3420 which only cost £42. The onboard graphics is plenty enough for a general purpose pc that the most taxing games it will ever play is facebook games. CPU performance is very good too at 3ghz and 3.2ghz for the 3420. They run cool and use very little power too. I don't know why they are not used more often. Theres a review of the 3220 here, just take a look at those gaming scores!!

Athlon 5350 with a ssd is what I'd get. Low power, great bang for buck quad core.

While I agree on the performance, the CPU's the same price as the pent, and probably isn't as powerful overall.

While I rate that Kabini stuff well, I'm not sure if I can dig the pricing (Yes, I know, tiny money, but so's the pentium)

Ignoring that boards aren't listed and the CPU's are all pre-order :p

The boards start from cheaper, and ram would be a bit cheaper if you just have 1 module. But yeah we're talking pocket change.

Most of the reason id get it would be to see what I can get out of it overclocking with the asus board :)

In the UK we're probably talking 30 quid.
So about 70 for CPU and board, that's Haswell Pentium set up money, with greater future proofing etc.

And the RAM isn't a plus point, as one module will go in either set up.

Just need to google am1 and click the shopping tab.

It won't, no. But it's a low power/cost alternative. Which might be better for a home computer for his old man.
