AMD fanboy wants to defect

Hey guys, guess what!

I've been an AMD fanboy for too long, i always say variety is the spice of life so i want to defect to the Intel faction! i mean, i'm not stupid, i've seen the figures and i know how much better the core2s are and since getting a dual core system last year i've found myself using more and more multi threaded applications so now I think it's time to step up to quad processing.

so, my question for you guys is simple, i know sod-all about Intel chip sets so please tell me which of the chipsets is best suited for a quad core system that will be used heavily for gaming.

One other thing, I'm still an nVidia fanboy, simply because they're easier to install and run quieter (I love having a near silent system even if it means underclocking a processor to get the water cooling running on natural air convection) so I'll need a chipset that's compatible with nForce stuff.

If you want, you can go the whole way and recommend me a motherboard that can run two nVidia graphics cards in SLI and has about 8 SATA slots and RAID 0 hardware enabled, this is all i ask from a mobo!

Q6600 is the only processer you need, i came from pretty much the same system as you, had the 4400+ but quad core is super!!! gained about 1500 on 3dmark 06, from old system,

but yeah, for its price and power. the q6600 is where its at.

i wouldnt bother with the GO-6600 unless you into a lot of benchmarking and overclocking, ;)

The P35 boards are where its at with C2ds and Q2ds really. Although they dont do sli that is a total waste of time anyway.

These boards overclock like beauties. Of corse there is the new boards coming out around november and they are serposidly SLI.But arguements with Nvida and Intel may mean they don't have SLI. Or may run it without Nvida support, but im not sure how that would work.

The Abit IP-35 Pro is an excelent board and many would recomend it. Many would also recomend the Giagbyte DS4. So take your pick really. My money would be with Abit Ip-35 Pro though :P
 
If you have waited this long you might as well wait & see what Barcelona brings to the table (& X38 for Intel).
 
Hmm, guess i'm playing the waiting game again then... silly me should have checked out the news first, i think i'll do some research on future developments then get back to you guys, but thanks for giving me a good start.
 
I'm also in the same situation, I have always been AMD and ATi but this week I have just bought a 8800 Ultra as my previous X1800 XT is just not cutting it for the new games coming soon (ET:QW, Bioshock, MOH:A, UT3 etc...) So currently i'm running an AMD 64 3700+ on a DFI Lanparty nF4 with 2GB Crucial Ballistix mem with my new EVGA 8800 Ultra and only manage 7,000 in 3DMark2006 :D I think I can double that with an Intel C2D and so have chosen to go for the E6850...

The problem is motherboard choice, I am looking at the nForce based ASUS P5N32-E but keep hearing about the Intel P35 based motherboards and how good they are. Please note I have NO intention of overclocking, I just don't have the patience for it else I would go for the E6600 CPU and overclock it. I also want RAID0 which I know the nForce chipsets do but what about the P35 chipset?? I don't think i'll ever do SLi either.

Your advice please!

Edit: What about quadcore over dual core? Is it really best to go for the quad over dual?
 
I think people are realising now that the quads are the way to go unless you want to shed out for a new cpu in 6 months.

Also overclocking a C2d or Q2d is reallllly simple. Its not very hard and doesn't take long. Just change a number or two and its done. Unless you want to push it to the limit you could just go for the average overclock people are getting and its a good chance yours will be 100% stable on it. Like a q6600 at 3ghz i beleive is almost always stable. The new Go versions sound like they are overcloking very well. People reaching 3.7 stable on air.


So i would say definitly get a P35 board. I personaly would suggest the Abit Ip35 pro. And yes they do do raid.

Something I forgot to mention; the EVGA 8800 Ultra is a very long card and it covers the SATA ports on my current DFI board meaning i've lost my stripe array and have reverted to IDE drive so I need to consider that on the motherboard also. I noticed the ASUS I mentioned originally has the SATA ports on their side instead of facing up, it will be this which decides which brand I get.
 
Dont get asus boards. Their placing of sata's is poor and yes the card will cover some of them.

The abit does not stuffer this. Neither does the giagbyte i beleive.
 
Cool, I think i'll go get me that Abit board, it's the first outing for me on that brand, ive only used ASUS, Gigabyte and DFI before. I'll go check out that Q6600 overclocking thread and see what people have managed before I order.
