AMD: FAQ for Project FreeSync is up

I was under the impression they couldn't output at 144hz only 120hz, sure I've read it on these forums a few times? Meh perhaps I'm wrong.

Edit: Some looking up, seems setting 144hz is fine in most cases, in some instances CCC would just refuse to show a 144hz option (13.x driver era) and it would need to be forced via CRU. Other instances suggesting the screen go's ape at random moments at 144hz while 120hz is flawless, fixes for which appear varied from just doing a clean driver sweep to buying a whole other card, so not sure what the cause of this was.

So yeah, I was wrong, it does or did seem to have a few issues that left some with settling for 120hz as a solution.

Hello everyone,

As you may have noticed we provided answer for some of your questions. I hope they help clarify some of the discussion (questions) you had.

And by "we provided" I mean that I worked with my colleague Robert H (a.k.a. Thracks), I'm sure some of you know him already. So a big thank you to Robert and the rest of the AMD folks at HQ who helped as well.

Also, I'm still going to try my best to get you more answers to your other questions here. It will take me some time. As always, I'll keep you up to date on my progress.

Thanks Sam :)

Colour me completely unsurprised.

AMD should absolutely be putting pressure on vendors for the firmware to land with customers.

You must be joking right? Do you really think for one second a company say like Asus would simply release a firmware and loose out on a feature that can sell the displays?
If you do then your mad.

I would be very surprised if we see any getting updated.

Well obviously I didn't think that a vendor would simply release a firmware update, because I said that they likely won't  (And have maintained that line) And hence why I was unsurprised AMD have no expectations of firmware releases...............

Hence why I said "AMD should put pressure on vendors".

Also, we've just had a massive boom in monitor technology, it'd probably make a lot of business sense for vendors to launch capable firmware for Freesync, as it may make one buy a monitor quicker, as you've experienced the tech, liked it, but you want to upgrade your monitor, which in some part has to do with Free sync. How often do many of us buy monitors compared to other parts?

Somewhat funnily, you have no interest in FreeSync/Gsync so you wouldn't buy a monitor for it. But if you experienced the tech with your current monitor, chances are you'd be more likely to invest into an even better set up with the technology.

I know my display won't get firmware at all, it was first thing I tweeted to BenQ. Am not interested in it at all tbh but would like to try it yes.
II would like 1440p 144hz more, but that display is over priced. So I might as well wait for Freesync to then give it a try.
Have any manufacturers came out yet and said they update? Do we even know of a display that can possibly feature it with a firmware?

I don't know of any specific monitor that are capable.
I don't think any vendor will update their monitors.

But that doesn't remove the fact that there are monitors completely capable of being flashed with a new firmware.

A much more important question is when will AMD make drivers available? Because with out drivers there could be loads of monitors available and it wouldn't do anyone any good.

I think Warsam said the drivers will be out when the first Free-Sync monitor arrives.

Fair enough I suppose, except is that going to be the first Uk available, usa available or what about Korean imports. because if it is anything like G-Sync they will be available long before a proper release here or in the usa.

Some form of date would be much better for everybody.

Well, I would imagine the drivers are nearly ready and if they aren't they won't take long to get ready. Remember this has been part of the embedded display port spec since 2009 and AMD and Intel having been using it for power saving by altering the refresh rates on laptops.
