AMD: FAQ for Project FreeSync is up

You could have owned a Gsync monitor in January, there's a difference.

Gsync (Even though limited) was available only 3? months after its conception etc.
We're 6 months on with FreeSync and we're no closer to anything really.

Could have if I wanted to have that specific type and size of monitor, according to the GeForce website the upgrade kit was only for a specific model of monitor. Its only now (barely) that people have options.

But you can't even buy 1 freesync monitor yet, so its a mute point really mate.

Anyway, lets get back on topic. The OP has a lot of questions to answer that myself and others have set to him, so lets see what the responses are before going further into rhetoric.

As for Freesync, in typical AMD fashion they have led people to believe that its going to be free, and there's no chance of that happening.

Only an idiot, or somebody trolling would say something like this. What were AMD going to supply free monitors and Graphics card to whoever wanted freesync?

But, for those people who keep saying this.

Implementation of DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync technology is offered to VESA members free of charge, no license fee. That's why the freesync name came about. Monitor manufacturers don't have to pay for another add-on module or anything like that.

Or to put it more bluntly,

Monitor manufacturers have to pay Nvidia to use Gync, they don't have to pay AMD anything to use Adaptive-sync.

And here me thinking all this time I was getting a free monitor. :D

Well said.

Well the 4k gsync monitor costs no more than the regular 4k monitors.

Also for the dynamic refresh rates during gaming you need a new series card.

So potentially for people wanting to use it with their current monitor or card it's going to be expensive.

I think that is Acer trying to get ahead of its competitors.

Not at all, I thought freesync worked for anyone on an amd card, I did not think they would have to buy a new monitor to use it.

What exactly is free about it then?

Gsync pay for a new monitor to be able to use.

Freesync pay for a new monitor to be able to use.

Same thing really although the freesync compatible monitors might be a bit cheaper.

So Gsync didn't exist because it didn't have the monitor you wanted?
I agree it's only really now they've we've got choice.

Gsync's still a no-go for me (Even if I owned Nvidia) as there's no 3440x1440 monitor yet (If there ever will be)

It's not about costing the customer anything, it's name is because it's free to add to the manufacturer process. Meaning any monitor coming out can easy support it for free.

No need to pay amd to use it, like Gsync, take Gsync for example BenQ want to use Gsync they must pay nvidia to use it.

And I not sure where you getting, every GPU to support it without monitor. It's been known from day one a new monitor would be needed.

They don't? It's only the new stuff (As in, not the 7XXX and its rebrands) only the 290 etc.

PCM2 or whatever he's called also said it won't necessarily be free (yet) as they'll all have controllers not capable of adaptive sync stockpiled, so they'd be taking a hit by leaving their "dead" stock of none capable controllers.
Monitors that launch in the next 2 months or whatnot (Take the AOC 3440x1440 I'll be buying) would be prime candidates for Freesync. Will they get it? Probably not, and probably not even capable of.

I believe the LG 3440x1440 is labeled 1.2A DP. Is there Freesync? Nope.

Yeah I know that, but don't think Ian does.

Edit
Isn't it 1.3, 1.2A could be patched.

Only an idiot would post crap that's not been said or have ready made excuses for amd.

So as a consumer what's free? The idea?

Misleading name if they do call it freesync.

It's as easy as this. You get a freesync monitor and it's £500. For the exact same monitor with G-Sync you will pay extra as the G-Sync module is an add in. This is why it's called Freesync in my opinion.

Is there a release date for the monitors capable of free sync?

Not yet no, but its tipped that it should be this fall that the first review model might pop up. For buying one though, probably Q1 next year at the earliest. I also don't think the name "freesync" will remain either, as its "project freesync", so it sounds to me like it'll get a rebrand to get away from the word "free" closer to the time.
