Hi

my dads looking for a new monitor for a new build we are doing in the summer for the new flight sim game coming out... ive advised an IPS panel , 144Hz, low response time but Iam confused about the whole V-Sync thing as some sites say you can now use AMD FreeSync monitors with nVidia cards

is this right?

thanks

yes, with some caveats... Only works on pascal or newer cards (10 series). Only works with display port. And it can be hit and miss as to how well it will work depending on the monitor. So you may need to do some googling to find out how well the specific monitor you're looking at will work.

Nvidia does now support Freesync. It will work out of the box with Freesync monitors that are certified by Nvidia, and should work fine with non certified if you "force" Freesync in the Nvidia driver software.

My UJ59 freesync monitor (not officially supported with Nvidia) definitely didn't work its freesync with my Nvidia. But that led me to find I in no way miss g-sync/freesync.

A lot of Freesync monitors will work fine, but some can have issues such as flickering screen.

There is this list on Nvidia's website. Not sure how up to date it is but there are quite a few G-Sync compatible ones if you scroll down.

As above, but even if it's on the list, there could still be some issues. I'm using a AG241QX with a 1080 Ti and it flickers when it drops under 30FPS (City Skylines for example). But even then with such a high refresh rate I hardly notice much tearing compared to a 60Hz monitor so I turned it off.

There are other monitors that requires you to fiddle with the sync range to get a better experience, and some that have no issues at all, so worth searching around first to see if that model has any issues with an Nvidia card.

basically my dad is after a new monitor for the new flight sim that's coming out, I've advised an IPS panel, with 1-5ms response time, 1080p (or 1440p less GPU resource required for 4K), Display Port and HDMI and 144Hz (can be dropped to 60Hz if needed)

we will likely buy a Nvidia card

can any recommend any? seems from what I read its a mission to find out which monitors V_SYNC is going to work - nor me or him can abide 'tearing'

what kind of card would suffice (cheapest) simply for the new flight sim (cant find any recommended specs) then we want G-SYNC one 144Hz 27"-ish pref 4K or 1440p
thanks
