Even though modern graphics cards are powerful enough to play the majority of video games in ultra HD resolutions, two modern graphics cards are usually required to play all the latest video games in 4K (3840*2160) ultra-high-definition resolution with all graphics effects enabled. AMD believes that the forthcoming graphics chips will significantly improve performance in high resolutions and one GPU will be enough to enjoy titles in UHD mode.

“Ultimately, the evolution of GPU horsepower is the biggest factor in driving 4K forward,” said Robert Hallock, head of global technical marketing at AMD, in an interview with GamingBolt web-site. “Graphics being such an important part of our business, of course, you can count on great progress on that front as the years wind on.”

AMD’s upcoming graphics adapter – the Radeon R9 380X – will feature 4096 stream processors as well as 4GB of high-bandwidth memory with up to 640GB/s bandwidth. Increased GPU horsepower and increased memory bandwidth will significantly improve performance in 4K resolution.

I won't be buying one if it's only got 4GB of VRAM.

I'm gonna hold out for reviews before I can decide. I imagine these cards will give massive FPS increase but in games where more than 4GB is required will still have FPS drops and stutters like GTX 970 3.5GB/980 4GB/R9 290/290X 4GB.

Tempted to hold out for 390X as that will likely have a newer implementation of HBM and capable of more than 4GB.

We need reviews though, these cards might blow us away. Certainly looking more promising than other recent cards.. 4096 Shaders, 640GB/s bandwidth it's a monster !

Well with two 290X's at 3440x1440 I get stutters in BF4. VRAM usage shows 3881MB max usage, however I am fairly convinced it is a VRAM issue as I have a 5960X as my CPU and no real bottleneck on my system. I am just unwilling to pay the expense to upgrade to 290X 8GB with the new GPUs so close away. Don't get me started on SOM - I've given up on that game till I upgrade one way or another!

Guess they can't release an 8gb as it will likely eat into their 390 cards.

unless they release this in 4/8gb, and the 390 in 8/16gb :D - Seriously doubt that will happen thought

The important bit the card specs is not a quote if you read it carefully and just pure speculation.

Next rumour please lol.:D

I don't think it is a VRAM issue. I don't get that stutter or stuff like that on the graph in BF4 until I go past 4GB.
At 3.8GB, you shouldn't see anything like that, so I'd put my money on something else. What exactly, I don't know.

As for SoM, do you see issues when using high textures instead of ultra and can you even tell the difference in detail?

Well I have posted in the Mantle thread.

I haven't tried SoM for some time, I will try later this week or next.

I had stutters in BF4 with a 7990, can't remember what I did to solve it. It was a cfg tweak along with turning frame pacing off if I remember rightly.

what happened to ur rumour thread huh!
u meant to be keeping up on this stuff :)

It is still there and if people post items in it I will put them in the OP.

I will put this in myself as it is total garbage. A couple of quotes sandwiching pure speculation on the specs.

Give me a few minutes to stop laughing at the Kitguru article first though.:D

I think it has to do with the new memory type. I think the first version can only work in 4GB stacks, 8GB stacks being introduced in v2. wouldn't know if you can connect "stacks" or not tho. Just working from memory of early articles, I may be wrong.
