AMD FX-8 9370 Black Edition Cooling Issues

Hey All,

After making a post on here a week or so ago I was told that my CPU was bottlenecking my system quite badly so I went out and got an AMD FX-8 9370 as I didn't want to replace my motherboard in order to switch to intel.

I then also at the same time purchased a Dark Rock 2 Pro CPU Air cooler but annoyingly it won't fit in my case due to the Corsair Vengance memory being way to tall. I have also read in a few places that no air cooler's can really keep the 9370 really cool under load due to the amount of power this CPU uses.

I stupidly tried the stock cooler that came with my previous AMD FX 6100 and the temps go to about 67oc just sitting in the bios and when I tried to boot PC just shut down at which point I have gone back to my old CPU for time being.

So what I am hoping is if anyone can help me figure out what is the best and most reliable way I can keep this CPU super cool under load without going to the extreme, I am open to water cooling or anything else but I have never done it before so am quite the novice.

System spec is:

OLD CPU: AMD FX-6100 3.30GHz (3.90GHz Turbo)

NEW CPU: AMD FX-8 9370 Black Edition 8 Core AM3+ 4.7GHz Max Turbo

Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH AMD 990FX

Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance Black (4x4GB) DDR3 PC31600MHz

Graphics Card: Powercolor Radeon R9 290X OC "BF4 Edition" 4096MB GDDR5

Hard Drive 1: OCZ Solid 3 120GB 2.5" SATA-III Solid State Hard Drive

Hard Drive 2: OCZ Solid 3 60GB 2.5" SATA-III Solid State Hard Drive

Power Supply: 1000W Corsair RM Series 80PLUS Gold Modular Power Supply

OS: Windows 8.1

Thanks in advance.

Change out your RAM? You'd get a decent price on the RAM you already have and you can just get some low profile stuff instead :)

No, no, no, no, no, no just heat up the ram slightly and take the heat spreader off*, i did this to my vengance when it wouldnt fit under my cooler. It can be easily stuck back on at a later date.

* i used a hair dryer to heat it and the handle of a plastic fork to get it off.

I'm not an AMD user but isn't the 9370 a 220w CPU and Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 rated up to 140w.. According to Asus it's okay if you use both 4pin and 8pin 12v CPU power plugs.

What nick.lidgett said. No big deal to remove heat spreader. Just don't use too much force.

Do make sure your case is cooling well. Your Radeon R9 290X is about 250w so lots of heat coming off of it too.. even though it has reference / blower cooling.

Hmmm now I am abit worried about the motherboard side of things after reading the above link :| Baring in mind my Asus Sabertooth isn't even the R2.0 its the Original version.

Not sure what to do now as that link states the VRAMs will get silly hot as well and AMD recommend watercooling that and the CPU in separate loops, If I knew upgrading to this CPU was going to be such a pain I'm not sure I would have bothered now.

Question is now I have these parts do I go all out and watercool the whole lot, or should I stop here and go down the intel route? Assuming there high end CPU's don't need this much cooling and power as the 9370?

Just bash on a H50 and you're sorted.

Personally, I think your upgrade to the FX93 should have been an upgrade to an Intel.

I bet that my R9 290 with a 4670K would be outbenching you in terms of frame rate.

I did think about going intel but I didn't want the hassle of having to change the motherboard and then reformat as well so seemed the best option but starting to wish I did.

Space is so I thought quite good as have a NZXT 820 Full tower, Just if I get for instance a H100i kit for the 9370, Would I need to think about extra cooling for the VRM's as stated but a post on AMD forums?

H100i is an investment, no matter what, with 4 Akasa Apache or Enermax Magma fans to change the Corsair ones. Get a refurbished model that goes for around 40. (did the same and looks fine with new fans)

After that.
a) return the 9370 and get a 8320/8350 and overclock it to 4800-4900 (most can do it with H100 having better fans like the above)
b) sell the motherboard & get an 4770K (or 4820K). If you aren't on overclocking, get a 4771.

Going from FX to 4670 is sidestep to downgrade.

For gaming, it's going to be an upgrade, an R9 290 and a 4670K will 1 up an FX93 and an R9 290X far more times than the FX93 and R9 290X will win out.

But if I was making that sort of upgrade, it'd have to be to an i7.

I'd just get the cooler to use the FX 93, live with it sort of thing.

That CPU has never been supported by that board, I would advise and im a total noob to sell or return it and get a 8350, flash latest bios onto board install cpu and overclock it to 4.5

You will then have identical rig to mine :)

I havnt built it yet, sorry dude I pick up the parts tomorrow as soon as is built i can let you know. I know there are plenty of people running that CPU on that MOBO. :) The Rev 1 is still a decent mobo (correct me if im wrong) and was advised that to update it to rev 2 would be a needless change for that setup.

I also run my vengeance naked (at 2GHZ). It is easy to remove the heatsinks with a hairdryer. Ram does not need heatsinks or certainly not gross ones except for looks.

The 9370 is physically similar to the 8350/20 and should run well on the sabretooth even if not listed.
