Hi all, i'm hoping someone can give me some sound advice as to performing my first overclock on a FX-8120.

Not interested in a Intel vs. AMD debate, really just after some honest help regarding the overclock

This will be my first overclock, i'd like to aim for 4.0ghz. I'm sure it could be pushed further but baby steps are best steps.

The cooler I have been looking at is the Noctua NH-D14. I am not interested in water cooling. Is this air cooler as good as everyone says it is?

What software should I download to monitor/perform the overclock - have not overclocked before so really am new to it all. Where do I start?

Thanks in advance (hopefully) :)

Lol

Asides from the Phanteks cooler, the Noctua is as great as everyone says ;)

4Ghz, the old standard lol
you don't use software per se to Overclock, it's done in the Bios
Restarting your machine , you should probably hit either delete or F1 on to enter bios, if your board is anything like mine then it'll be the delete key

ideally your first port of call should be your motherboard manual, in the bios section, there is a wealth of tips and knowledge saying what basically every function does.

Oh and your Signature, the rules say 4 lines max, you might want to trim it down ;)

Sorry what? :p

You know what you did ;)

As its an unlocked chip it should be as easy as upping the multiplier a step at a time (18-19, 19-20 etc) until it becomes unstable and then add more voltage until it stabalizes and then carry on untill you hit the 'wall' or the target speed you want. The awesome cooler you have will deal with the heat.

You can use intel burnin test to test your overclock and hwmonitor to keep an eye on the temps (google them)
