AMD FX-8350 Upgrade!

Wouldn't that require a motherboard swap as well? So you'd be paying more than $178. Buy an i5 instead, a 2500k or a 3570k, even if it doesn't slot into your current board, you can get a low end Z77 for about $50 or so, and the difference between a FX-8350 and a 2500/3570k is phenomenal.

any upgrade needs a new mobo. thts a core 2 mobo cnt remember the socket is it 775?

AMD AM3+ Motherboards are cheaper then Intel's Z77......I can get AMD 990X for less then $100, but Intel's good Z77 would cost $120 or so.

Intel is better if your looking to Game with top end GPU's like a 7970 / GTX 680 or SLI / xFire, anything less than that and its all about the same.

the FX-8350 has the edge over the i5's in most productivity work while the Intel is quite a bit more power efficient.

Thats pretty much it in a nut shell, Both chips have their advantages and disadvantages.

IMO if your not gaming at the highest level the FX-8350 is the one to go for.

Intel is much less hassle when it comes to cooling, 3570K puts out about 60W (GPU excluded) under load whereas AMD are 125W+. I've had nothing but headaches with Piledriver cooling wise only people who have big overclocks are those ignoring total stability.

Unless you spend 8hrs a day constantly encoding stuff there is no point in getting AMD over 2500/3570K because it is still a fair bit slower in the majority of other things and you've got loads more heat to contend with once you put the cores to any meaningful (heavy) use.

Another thing is that per core the FX8350's performance isn't amazingly better than an over-clocked Q6600 whereas a 3570K is, so if yours is OC'd thats something to consider. Of course you could just OC the FX8350 or 3570K too.
