Hi all

A bit of an elementary question for many of you:

If the new AMD CPUs that are coming out have the Piledriver architecture, does this mean that they will be AM3+?

Nobody out there seems to be naming sockets yet.

Hell of a power consumption, too (220W)! It'll eat more power than my GPU.

Cheers in advance.

You're probably going to want a top end AM3+ motherboard at that, I wouldn't be surprised to see some dedicated motherboards released.

Oh, well that's more cash. Would my Asus Crosshair V Formula Z do the job?

If it is new mobo as well it might be the time to go with Haswell.

Have you tried to get your current CPU up to the to be released piledriver speeds?

I didn't have much trouble when clocking with my formula Z and managed to get my two 8350's to 5GHz without too much fiddling and tweaking.

It runs at 4.525 GHz (weird). Last I tried, I couldn't get any more out of my RAM than 1760 MHz, and no more out of my Bus Freq. than 220. That is on CPU LEVEL UP 2.

Maybe there is a way that I could up the CPU RATIO, because that is still on AUTO.

Sometimes it wouldn't boot, and I just stopped trying to go higher because I figured a 13% CPU overclock was okay.

Cheers

I dont think anyone should upgrade from 8350 to 9???. Wait untill decent high end steamroller chips.

agree

because

this

I thought the 9xxx chips were just binned/clocked 8350s anyway?

I think you will likely be able to clock your CPU to 5 GHz if you have the cooling for it already (if you dont, you wont have the cooling for that fx 9000). Try upping the multiplier and knock your ram down a notch. What voltage are you at? there are quite a lot of guides on the ROG site to overclock with your motherboard and that CPU to hit 5GHz.
