Hi Guys,

I'm looking at a new build to replace my ageing Q6600. I've decided to side with AMD. This may change when the benchmarks finally arrive but I doubt it. I figure even if the BDs aren't as good as SBs I'll still likely side with AMD because I appreciate their upgrade potential and generally like the company more. Based on a slide reported by TPU which states the FX-6110 will be $240 I've estimated the UK price will be £150. I'm sure it'll end up being more but I'm willing to give leeway. So... these are the components I was thinking of using. I'm interested to see what you guys think and any alternatives you have, preferably non-Intel.

AMD FX-6110 =£150
MSI ATI Radeon HD 6970 2048MB £254.99
MSI 990FXA-GD65 AMD 990 FX (AMD AM3/AM3+) £112.99
OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SSD (AGT3-25SAT3-60G) £92.99
Fractal Design Define XL Case £89.99
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM £79.99
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz £59.99
Corsair Hydro H60 CPU Cooler with free Akasa Apache Fan £59.99
OCZ StealthXStream 2 700W Power Supply £52.98
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 320GB SATA 6Gb/s £29.99
Samsung SH-S222AB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW £16.99

Total : £1003.83

BD won't come out till the end of this year (I believe October is the current release time, and even that could be pushed back), so planning a build now is an exercise in futility. Prices will change and a new line of GPUs may even be out by then.

We don't know when BD CPUs are coming out, for all you now it could be September or even later by which time prices will have changed. Also I don't really understand the siding with a brand that some people do. If intel have a better CPU out then why would you limit yourself and go with AMD.
I'd say waiting before you start pricing things up is the best idea. For example I was told I would have £500 to spend on a computer months ago but i would be buying it this week. I did so much pricing up back then and now, the system I was making then is probably worth about £400. I know it is very tempting to spec up early but it's probably not a spec you will stick with.

September is touted by AMD with the 60-90 day thing.

Thanks for all your replies guys.

Indeed. Here's hoping it's sooner. Should have mentioned in my first post: I'm pricing it now as I've promised my current Q6600 to my niece as her's in broken so was planning on dropping in a cheap Phenom 2 for now, which I'm pretty sure will work unless anyone know's different?

Also I don't really understand the siding with a brand that some people do. If intel have a better CPU out then why would you limit yourself and go with AMD.

I can think of a few reasons:

- As someone else put it: if Ferrari's are faster than Porsche's then why would anyone buy a Porsche? Personal preference.
- I don't like the way Intel do things (such as constantly changing socket).
- Intel have shown anti-competitive behaviour and have on occasion abused their position.
- If everyone bought Intel we'd all have to pay more.

Dont think the board is a triple lane board? Might be 'better' to get a dual lane memory set?

Are any of the 990FX boards triple lane? Also, should I go for faster ram or lower latency?

I really have to respond to this because your arguments are pretty awful.

First off, there are stylistic differences between Ferraris and Porsches. They look different, sound different, and drive different. Unless you're the type of person who sits at home alone staring at your open bench setup because you find the look of particular components erotic, you simply buy a processor because it performs the best for the money.

Intel and AMD have both been equally evil and awful companies in the past- changing sockets, increasing the multiplier by 1 and charging an extra £10/£20 for the processor, you name it. It's a two-company monopoly, and both of them have made it incredibly difficult for any other CPU manufacturer to get in on the action. AMD are no saints.

Finally, everyone buys what's the best value for money. It's brand loyalty that pushes up prices- look at NVidia, the GTX 560Ti is nowhere near as good as the 6950 2GB, but they charge the same price for it because "ATi bad, I prefer NVidia". If Intel are the best value for money so everyone buys Intel, then the moment Intel starts raising prices because of their huge market share, AMD will capitalise on this and become better value for money.

Think you are taking the Ferrari and Porsche analogy far too literally. Anyway, post wasn't meant to be an AMD vs Intel argument. Just accept that I don't like Intel and let's leave it at that eh?

Looking at your price range, a 2500K would be perfect! Don't bother with the waiting game, you'll end up waiting forever.

Any Phenom II will work in a 990fx board. At least they all list AM3 Phenom II processors under their compatibility list :)

You could save yourself £30 by getting the MSI 6950 and flashing it to 6970, as they're revision 1's.
