I just built my girlfriend an AMD only FX rig which she will be using for browsing, watching movies and playing games such as Alien Isolation and the Sims 4/3.

Specs
FX8370E
Asus Crosshair Formula Z
Asus Radeon R9 290P
8GB Radeon Gamer Memory 2400Mhz CL10
R7 Radeon 480GB SSD

Since getting the FX8370E I've been having quite a bit of fun overclocking, these chips overclock really well!

With that in mind, I'd love to see what some of you are getting with your overclocks on your AMD processor (Or apu). So far I've managed

4.4Ghz @1.3v
4.8Ghz @1.428v
5.0Ghz @1.452v

The 5Ghz bench test is ongoing, but I'm amazed at how little voltage i need from 4.8gHZ-5Ghz.

These items were bought from Overclockers so naturally I'm going to post about my experiences with them here, as i do with all the hardware i buy from Overclockers. I've been doing this since i became part of the community in 2007 and i will continue to do that as long as the Dons allow.

This is about how well your AMD FX processor overclocks, so feel free to contribute your own experiences, screenshots etc. :)

Btw MMJ, those Noctua fans are PWN so complete silence at idle as you can control them via the motherboard or use AI Suite.

I'm using 5 of those fans, great thing about them is you can run them nice and quiet but can crank them up when needed :)

Anyways, I'll need to take some screencaps of mine but i can run 5.1Ghz on 1.52v with my FX-9590.

The newer chips look to be a more mature process though which is good news :)

The newer chips are definitely higher binned for sure.

I reckon i can beat your 5.1Ghz with my FX8370E. :D

I got 5.15Ghz on my 8350 @1.5v. Thats great voltage to reach 5Ghz though, have you upped the fsb at all? or just straight multiplyer?

Very impressive. I used the core ratio multiplyer to get mine.

My 8350 is at 4.4 with a be quiet dark rock 2 cooler. Its stable at the moment I had a few issues at 4.5 but I reckon I can get it there with a bit more reading up into voltages and motherboard tweaks

Thanks to ohecksecks for helping me on here too otherwise I would have been stuck

I had a Asrock Fatality Killer 990FX board before this and i had a lot of trouble getting a stable overclock and keeping vrm temps under control. I gave up in the end and bought a Asus Crosshair Formula Z from Overclockers. Glad i did as vrm temps are now lower than my cpu temps and are a non issue. Great board this one!

Formula Z is definitely the best board for it. Try out clocking the fsb, gave higher scores in cinebench for the same overall clock speed as just using the multi. Bit more of a pain but fun to do :D assuming you want max overall performance

Interesting, how much extra performance? I've not explored this option yet, but now you've got me interested.

What other voltages do you need to alter if you go this route? For now all I've touched is Core voltage, Dram voltage and LLC High.

I love that Mobo ...just something about it I like :)...Still got mine in a box somewhere lol

Got to be the best AMD board going i think.

All the fx silicon have been refined since around 2013, It also took Amd 2 years to finally learn how to refine their p-states and operating voltages.
But yours does look a beaut, what are your package and cpu temps?

I achieved 4.8ghz game stable/ 5ghz benchable stable on (little beast) a 4+1 £38 MATX 78lmtusb3 no throttling.

voltage scaling looked like this for a 2013 Dec fx8320.
1.18 v 4ghz
1.25 v 4.2
1.35 v 4.3
1.40 v 4.5
1.45 v 4.7
1.48 v 4.8
1.52 v 5.0

Check a few posts above for the temps Dave.

Now testing 5.2Ghz core ratio voltage at around 1.536v. Package temp is close to throttling so this will likely be the limit. Will try FSB next.

Cool. You will eventually get to the point where more volts degrades the scores you achieve.

All I really wanted from my 8320 was to break 800 points in Cinebench but man, it fought me all the way. In the end I settled for 800 dead even before I ended up blowing something up :D

Have a read of this, Matt. It has all of the settings and FSB I used as pics.

For 5ghz I use a 230mhz bus. These boards should easily do 240+, though. Maybe one day when my lady isn't looking I will give it another shove. Her rig is all AMD too. 8320 + 7990.

Cheers, I'll take a look. Still learning the ropes with AMD Cpu overclocking, but I'm a fast learner!

I tell you what I have had more fun overclocking AMD than anything else. I used to have a P2 920 and I got that to 4ghz on a NHD-14.

I've had more fun with my 8320 than any other chip I've ever owned tbh. There's just so many little toys to play with :D

Yeah I'm having a blast especially as this is relatively new to me. I never realised these things overclock so well.

That is impressive Matt, i need 1.42v for 4.5Ghz, 1.46v for 4.6ghz and 1.48v for 4.7Ghz, that's as high as i can go with my FX-8350.

Asus Sabertooth 990FX.

Thanks Bug.

My old 8350 on an M5A99x motherboard 12/10/2013.
It also did 10 consecutive runs of IBT standard at 100+ Gflops using 16x 302Mhz.

803cb 5.04Ghz at 1.5V Windows 7 SP1

Nice. :)

For god sake Matt don't mention the fun you are having with your biased red toys even though you bought them yourself AND from this retailer! :p

I have a sabertooth and an 8320, stability flakes around the 4.8 so I run it under this for 24/7 use. If you recall I had a dodgy PSU around the time of the 7990's so it may be pushed further just not had the time.

I know right, heaven forbid! :p

Hey All,

Just saw this post and was hoping I could get a few tips of how to start overclocking, I currently have an AMD Black Edition FX 9370 and I'd like to get it up 5ghz ideally, using an ASUS sabertooth 990FX board.

Cooling wise its all sorted as just installed my first custom loop which was fun:

Any help or even a link to any rough guides would be good.

Cheers in advance.

Very nice sir!

Cheers Matt, lets hope it doesn't blow up tonight when I try some of this overclocking stuff.

Abit like letting a chimp loose in an antique shop and say don't touch or break anything.

You'll be fine, overclocking these chips seems fairly easy. I started at 4.4, then 4.8 and finally settled on 5Ghz. :)

Ouch 1.56V :D Not for too long I trust. Still it is a top frequency.

I normally run my 9590 at 4.85GHz and 5.15GHz turbo at 1.45V. Appears stable, could go higher if I had a better case.

Wow, you have a great chip my friend.

Just curious here before I get started and again thanks for the advice and links above,

But with a fully watercooled system and an ASUS 990FX board and the AMD Black Edition FX 9370 what's the rough sort of highest speed I could realistically get and be stable with? Or is it literally down to the individual chip?

Hard to say, will depend on the chip. Thanks to water cooling though you have a much better chance of going further.

Asus Realbench FTW. If you make it through the heavy multi tasking part you're golden :)

This. Spot on Andy, I've been using this to test. Realbench for an hour at maximum memory capacity is my go to tool for 24/7 stability these days. If it does not crash after an hour of that, I've yet to have a crash under general usage/heavy gaming.
