AMD FX Overclocking

I've finally kept it below 60, I know what you're saying about it being OK to go over but I feel more comfortable with it staying under

The below is at 4.5 and that's where its staying for now, appreciate its only 30 mins but on previous tests and bench's it would have hit 64 in that time

Edit - just realised HWMONITOR isnt showing the CPU temps in the pic, it was 56C max

What are your package temps? and I take it you are manually selecting your core voltage for the moment.

With the comments on here talking about low volts with E processors, this is the last peice of my build puzzle. Am I better to go with an earlier suggested 8320e or do I get the 8350 - confused!

The 8320E will probably be the better overclocker, so i'd go with that.

I agree. Latest and guaranteed made in newer process.

Oh and if you were going to go for the 8350. This is the same price:

Its will just be a slightly better binned one. So its up to you if you think its worth the cash (£40 over 8320E and theres no guarantee of it overclocking further, although it should)

Yes manual 1.344V, LLC Medium - Currently stressing at 4.6 and 53C package temp so my temps are looking much better after some drunken tinkering, only problem is I dont remember what the hell I did! I might have posted it all above somewhere

I think my CPU likes to stay below 1.4V otherwise it gets hot but I think the VCore is pretty good for 4.6 considering its the original generation 8350

I finally got there, 4.7 with 1.392 and LLC Medium.

There was quite a large difference between 4.6 stable and 4.7 stable in volts, I had to push it up by one and stress, blue screen, rinse and repeat about 5 times until it passed an hour of realbench and the temp touched 63 in the last 15 mins which is fine as it gets no where near that when benching and so it shouldn't do under general use and gaming

My Bench scores have improved over the previous 4.7 overclock too

Do my VRM temps and Vcore look ok?

I still think you have head room left. You need to be a bit more relentless IMO :P (sorry couldn't resist)

Highest I see is 62 so looks good to me. Your GPU is getting a bit toast at 94 though in the second shot.

Feeling brave enough to nudge up your HT and NB now? :)

It always hits 94 its a reference card, I read into it and its normal

I'm not feeling that brave yet, I wanted to get as much as I could out of it with what I have so now I've done that I'm going to do some gaming and monitor temps and FPS and hopefully all be will well

I'll eventually get bored and want more though

Hey Dave; Thont; Matt......quick question as I'm going to be spending my tax return soon......I know Asus Crosshair is a beast of a board but I've been hearing that the sound chip tends to fail on them....my only consider on that board;

its either that or sabertooth; both have 8+2 phase; only board that I know of that has more is Asrock Extreme 9 with 12+2 phase lol....

I'll be snagging a 8320E for under a 100 quid soon :) will end up replacing my air cooler with most likely a 80i or 100i.....

Not heard of that issue Mel, but what i can say is the Crosshair is a lovely board that makes overclocking easy. The Sabertooth is also a quality board so i don;t think you can go wrong with either.

I really wouldn't recommend buying a new AMD motherboard and CPU to go with it at this point.

It's 2015 and these AMD components have been out for 2-3 years.... The motherboard feature set is very dated, modern platforms on Intel (z97,x99) are way more up to date and will last you much longer.

I'd recommend a cheap Z97 board and a I5 4690k/i7 4790k, if you want your new build to last you a few years. Z97 has an upgrade path coming soon (Broadwell) and it supports all the latest technologies on the motherboard.

I know I'll get negative responses as this is an AMD thread - I really wish AMD had something new out, if it was competitive with Intel I'd be on that setup right now. We just have to wait for Zen, in 2016/2017, for anything new from AMD :(

You've already made your opinion known, an 8320E for under 100 quid is a pretty good deal as there isn't much Intel brings at that price point. A good mobo for the FX series CPUs can be bought brand new for about 80 quid.

I fail to see what a z97 mb (that you are recommending, seemingly based of the logic that AMDs MBs are dated) offers over the recommended 970's and 990's except for PCIE config and memory, which both have shown to have minimum/negligible performance difference for most users. The m.2 slot is nice, but that requires more expense again.

The recommended combos of yours will also increase someones budget from £182 (970 Gigabyte + 8320e) to over £250+ (based the i5 with the lowest priced z97 MBs which seems to negate some of the extra perks you are claiming you will get going intel.) The extra's a x99 offers also comes at the cost of even more expense.
Its a significant increase and it could be argued that the extra expense would be better put towards a better GPU for gaming.

I'm not trying to have an argument as it just my opinion and if I am missing what extra intel offers, please do explain. MB tech could very well become a very good reason to swap or go intel when x99 and ddr4 comes down in price, at the moment though, the only real reason I can see to go intel is for increased performance but at the cost of added expense, which is a perfectly valid reason for most people anyway, just not people on a tighter budget.

All hope on Zen being good, least it appears it will have the funding.
