AMD FX6300 OR INTEL i5?

How much do you want to spend? I'd definitely get the i5 4690k for starters

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99
Total : £177.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

as for an R9 290, these are the budget options

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99
1 x XFX Radeon R9 290 DD Black Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R9-290A-EDBD) £281.99
Total : £591.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

More expensive, premium options (the PCS+ cooler is excellent anyway ^ )

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-04-40G) £329.99
1 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD) £311.99
Total : £651.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

My money would be on the Sapphire Vapor-X or the PCS+ Powercolour, depending how much you want to spend

Cheers for all that! I'm gonna steer clear of XFX though, my current card is xfx and I've had nothing but problems with them. When do I get free delivery because I've made 100 posts and it's coming to nearly a year now?
Also, is the custom builds by overclockers UK good because I'm going to have to do a full overhaul of the main components now anyway!

You'll have to wait until September, or get yourself to 250 posts ASAP :D It's 250 posts & 60 days or something and 100 posts & a year. OcUK custom builds are top notch from what I've heard

100 posts in a couple of hours? Doable ;-) I have a choice now, only get a new mobo, cpu and gpu, or do a full refit, but with my current rig there is a definite underlying problem but me and 2 ict specialists don't know what it is for sure...

Well a new mobo, cpu and gpu is basically a full refit. If it's still broken after, replace the PSU. If still broken, replace RAM. Go for the cheaper option and then if required build it up :)

Lol, are they actually "ICT Specialists" or "money-grabbers"

One is my dad's friend who fixes computers on a daily basis but I'm not sure what he would be called, hence the possible miss titlement who did the work for free, who suggested a new mobo, which worked for a week until the old problems came back. The other was a pc world guy who looked it over and tested it and came to no real conclusion. I

Your dad's friend probably knows what he is talking about, the PC world guy? Prooobably not so much

And now I've got a local shop checking it over! I may just sell the stuff I do have, the ram cpu hdd etc and put that towards an i5 build. The pc world guy did look a bit lost when I was trying to explain what stuff I had put into the pc!

Go for it, though the buyer may not be pleased if they find they have a faulty item!

That's true! I'll see what the shop says, if they say it's the gpu and mobo messing up then that's okay, I can return them for what I originally payed but then it's a bit more difficult for the other parts to make any decent return on.
Are there any good second hand computer component shops that I could use?

Definitely wouldn't be putting a 290 anywhere near a 6300, OP, were it me and the money was there, i'd get yourself a i5 or i7 bundle and a 290-780, depending on what you prefer.

I've recently built a budget rig for my nephew and I've put an FX 8320 + 280x in it. The FX has been running at 4ghz, low temps, no issues (I've also used a cheap ~£25 cooler for it) and this setup runs every game I've tested at 60+ FPS on 1080p, max or very close to max details.

I was quite suprised by the performance of the system, particulary when I see everyone throw £500+ on CPU + GPU, even if they don't game at higher resolutions.

Depends what games you're playing or testing though.

Ignoring the CPU I already have games that an R9 290 at 1080p wouldn't be maxing at 60 FPS.
