Hello

I am looking at moving from 990fx to z97 and need to know whether i will have to reinstall windows?

I had looked at other threads about this and it seems that some people say that it will work and others say it won't.

I cant really do a clean install because the upgrade path had been XP->7->8 using upgrade keys so the only clean install i could do is of XP or could i use the "Refresh pc without affecting files" option?

Yeah it should work, however you may need to uninstall the AMD chipset drivers, and possibly network/sound drivers too
 
thanks, ill just clear amd catalyst drivers, usb and re-install of nvidia too.
Would the H100 fit too? i hear the socket is the same as 1155 and i think thats one of the fittings that came with it.

Thats one thing Intel does not change is the cooler mounting..Unless they have too.

So yes the H100 would fit it.
 
If you have a upgrade disk you don't need a previous version of windows installed to do a fresh install. Such a big move like that i would always do a clean install.
 
i only have a full version of XP and 7 as an upgrade disc, 8.1 pro came as a cd key from Microsoft website.
 
just in-case someone else needs to know.
replaced the motherboard and cpu, plugged in the same hard drives and it booted straight away. then just deleted amd chipset drivers and old asmedia/realtek stuff and installed intel ones so far so good.
