AMD Intros Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Quad-Core Processor

The only reason I think they could be doing this is if bulldozer could be getting postponed or they trying to get a few more sales out of Phenom II from people who are AMD fans who are sick of waiting for bulldozer.

Yeah it looks like AMD are trying to extend their Phenom II stock performance as much as possible until Bulldozer is finally ready.

I assume this is the last Phenom II though... or will there be a new 3.8Ghz one next month? lol

Really? whats the point of this release.

Pushes down the price of older models, i mean, you can now get a 955 for £95, which is a serious bargain when overclocked to the same speed, without releases like the 980, it would probably still be £150.

Well no, because ages before the 980 was announced its been hovering around £100 for months, its price before this was £120-130 about a year ago.

Heres its price a year ago - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18144591&highlight=phenom+II

this is just a lame release on old tech.

overclocks prety well considering is old phenom 4,1 ghz stock volts , 4.3 bit bigger volts and if you have good cooling 4.5 but bit to late tbh

Are you stupid or just ignorant.....every time AMD released a new, speed bumped version of this Phenom II quad core CPU (965,970,975 and now the 980), the 955 has dropped in price...

No it hasn't really.

And personal attacks are not allowed, have a RTM.

Problem with this is the 955 does 3.7 with a simply multi change at stock voltage these days. In fact most will do 4ghz at stock 1.4v, and 3.7 while undervolted.

There's a reason 955s are still selling well :)

Speed binned, not everyones overclocks. I've started working for an rival company of OCUK and we would use said item in one of our builds as our customer base do no overclock, they have no idea of it

If they have chips that are good enough to default at this clock, they would be silly not to release this. It will create more sales.

Pretty much almost all chips can easily do 3.8ghz on stock volts though... And the 980 should clock about the same as the other CPUs.

Really, seeing how close Bulldozer is, there really is no point. Are they trying to attract buyers to clear out the Phenom II CPUs?

Very interesting read.

Take a look at the overclockers batman benchmarks.

You'll notice that @ stock levels the 965 beats the 980 by 15-40fps dependant on resolution.

When overclocked it loses around 10fps though.
