AMD heading for a record revenue year!
Looks like Amd lost this year. Maybe they can try for the next
This.AMD will only lose its value crown when you can buy an Alder Lake system for cheaper than a Ryzen system. Just because a 12600K outperforms a 5600X for the same or less money doesn't mean the overall system is cheaper. Board prices, DDR5 prices and availability all factor in. How much of a performance hit do you see with DDR4? (I know it's negligible). Intel doesn't take the value crown if a 12600K system costs the same as a 5800X system, for example.
It's Intel's B and H series boards that will really put the value hurt on AMD because then you're not paying stupid money wasting a Z series board on a 12600K or 12400F, nor do you benefit from DDR5. That's also when AMD will need to drop prices somewhat to bring price-performance parity with the mid and low-end Alder Lakes.
12600K, B660, DDR4
vs
5600X, B550, DDR4
That is the battle to determine value king. And I think it's going to Intel properly, not just with the awesome but stunted 400-monikered SKUs we had since Comet Lake.
I was supprised to see how much the prices of the 5000 series increased especially at the mid low end where they wasn't a huge amount ahead of Intels competing parts and now with the release of ADL i5/i7s those same CPUs are up to 45% slower in some workloads yet AMD still refuse to cut prices and seem happy to sell on the back of their mindshare rather than performance.This.
It is slightly ironic how the tables have turned and that Intel is generally viewed as the value option. AMD gave us no 'value' cpu's in the 5XXX series and Intel have been more than happy to continue filling that gap.
What, like Intel for the past 5 years?...yet AMD still refuse to cut prices and seem happy to sell on the back of their mindshare rather than performance.
So amd has lost the value crown, the single core performance crown amd the reliability crown (large number of rma's) but that doesn't mean they are bankrupt.
They can still make a comeback next year... Cant they??
The 12600k out performs the 5800X for the most part and also if you go with Intel then you'll get a much better Z690 board thrown into the deal whereas for the 5800X you'll end up with a cheap sub £100 B550 if your trying to price match, I own a 5800X but if I was buying from scratch today and had to choose then ADL is a no brainier although I'd probably go for the 12700K or if I was on a budget the 11400F or wait for the 12400F.What, like Intel for the past 5 years?
And as I said above, there's no need for AMD to reduce prices when Alder Lake systems are more expensive than Ryzen systems. If a 12600K system costs the same as a 5800X system, you would be a fool to buy the former because you're spending the same money for an inferior setup. Which is exactly what you stated above: purchasing based on mindshare, not performance.
When that price point changes, i.e. budget Alder Lake motherboards with DDR4, then AMD will need to lower prices on their mid and low-end CPUs to maintain the competitiveness that they've rebuilt over the past few years. And not a moment before.

Which makes absolutely zero difference in the real world. Even the cheap B550 boards are usually built like tanks and have enough grunt to handle the 5950X....whereas for the 5800X you'll end up with a cheap sub £100 B550 if your trying to price match...
AMD is maintaining strong sales on the back of mindshare and the many people already owning AM4 boards. Zen4 will likely be the turning point where it will be AMDs platform that is hugely expensive as its solely locked into DDR5 and probably won't have B series boards for a good while after release.Good. Go and buy Intel they desperately need the sales. ADL is a no brainier, you’d have to have no brain to make the purchase.
Hey, that could be Intel’s new marketing slogan.
So given 2 similar performing CPUs but one with a high end board motherboard and the other with a budget board with both costing the same total price then you would choose the option with a cheaper board?Which makes absolutely zero difference in the real world. Even the cheap B550 boards are usually built like tanks and have enough grunt to handle the 5950X.
Cheap AMD boards and cheap Intel boards are not the same thing.
Some stuff
I wouldn't intentionally overpay on the motherboard, no. If I had to overpay on the motherboard then I'd factor in any future expandability before pulling the trigger. So no, I wouldn't pay premium Z690 prices for a 12600K unless I was forced into it. But then I never rush my purchases, so if I was really dead-set on having a 12600K, I would wait until the B series boards came out and then make a more informed and mature decision. So given 2 similar performing CPUs but one with a high end board motherboard and the other with a budget board with both costing the same total price then you would choose the option with a cheaper board?
Certainly this year and possibly the next few years.good for them
but that has bugger all to do with how much value to me something is
