I think the memory conntroller has gone on my x2 550 - I don't actually know if this is possible.
Out of the four slots on my mb, A1 B1 A2 B2, i can only boot if memory is in A1 or A2 or both, This results in single channel operation.

Question is, is it a cpu or mb problem, I'm assuming cpu as the controller is on board, but any advice would be appreciated as I don't want to replace the cpu with an x4 955 if I am still going to have the same problem.

If I have to replace both I may be better waiting for Bulldozer to see what that does to prices.

Another question is how much noticable difference does dual as opposed to single channel ram actually make.

Does it?

I thought with the controller on the cpu the fault would be there.

Any suggestions on how to check? Can't really afford to buy both at the moment so I want to be sure.

It'll be mobo, if its memory controller you'll be getting memory related bsods and crashes rather than it not recognising the dimms
