Just keeping an eye out for potential upgrade paths that will allow me to keep most of my existing components and upgrade incrementally.

The following motherboard looks interesting

MSI 790gx-8d: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/msi_releases_ddr2ddr3_hybrid_motherboards

It will work with an AM2+ CPU (I have a 5000+ BE) and DDR2 but will also work with an AM3 CPU with either DDR2 or DDR3.

Any other motherboards out with this feature yet?

Edit: I see that Jetway do a microATX board that does the same thing. Crossfire support too. That's a lot to squeeze into such a little package!

My understanding was it was more a case that the AM3 processor could fit into an AM2+ MB as it could support DDR2 and DDR3. So all AM2+ MB's should handle an AM3 CPU

It was the ability to transfer existing AM2 CPU and DDR2 to the board and then upgrade to AM3 with DDR2 or DDR3 that appeals to me.

These are hybrid AM2+/AM3 boards.

Looks like Jetway has decided to do an entire series of AM2+/AM3 boards with DDR2/DDR3 support -the combo series:

I have my eye on the HAO8 Combo (also L and D versions) boards, as they support 140w CPUs (most of the others are 125w only) and have 4 DDR3 slots for up to 8GB RAM (most of the others only have 2 DDR3 slots for 4GB). Full ATX too. http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/motherboard_view.asp?productid=650&proname=HA08 COMBOL

That's some upgrade path. Could drop in my DDR2 and Athlon X2 5000+ Black edition now, get an AM3 CPU later, then swap out the DDR2 for DDR3 and eventually upgrade to 6 core chip down the line if the BIOS is kept up to date. They're crossfire (dual x8 PCI-E 2.0) capable too but run as 16x PCI-E 2.0 for a single card.

I've put in a product suggestion in the relevant section on the forum. Anyone else want one? Seems like pretty unique feature as that MSI board never saw the light of day.

Just ordered a Jetway HA08 Combo from an online retailer in Norway.

Looks like I've got some fun to look forward to when I upgrade CPU: cores unlock.

(found on some Japanese forum - ain't Google translate brilliant? The CPU is a Phenom II 550 BE)

I love finding stuff out like that when I've already bought stuff.

Just to confirm - core unlock works fine on this board. I have Athlon X2 5000+ 45nm unlocked and overclocked to Phenom x4 FX-5000 at 3.1 GHz. Either my RAM or the board's FSB is stopping me getting to 3.2 (prime errors start cropping up at around 287 FSB. I'm pretty sure the cpu itself could go further.

Very happy with the board. The main drawback is it only seems to have CPU fan control. It runs the other fans at full speed.

Just had a look at this (don't need one, but intruiged anyway) - why have they written Hummer on the mosfet cooler?

Don't know but my PC is pulling 800w from the wall with CnQ enabled at idle...
;)

Jetway Hummer is just a range of motherboards. There's no tie in with the cars.

Turns out the 287MHz was a RAM wall not a motherboard wall. Bumped up the RAM voltage and just testing with Prime95 blend at 300x11 (3.3Ghz CPU).
