AMD new build - any thoughts?

New computer being built for:

- Programming
- Penetration Testing
- Running max 2 virtual machines

I'm NOT a gamer but want a top spec and also in the future I may well try a game out but it's definitely not a priority.

The Build​


CPU
AMD Ryzen 7 1700 8 Core AM4 CPU/Processor with Wraith Spire 95W cooler - £319


Motherboard
MSI AMD X370 GAMING PRO CARBON AM4 ATX Motherboard - £160

I honestly don't know what I should be looking at for the mobo. I've looked at a mid-range priced one, with plenty of USB's, space for 64gb ram, that's about it.

RAM

Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB DDR4 (2x16GB) 2133MHz Memory Kit - £215

GRAPHICS CARD

None - I will have some money left over and at some point will probably upgrade. But for now I will probably use the onboard graphics.

STORAGE

Sandisk Z410 480GB SATA III 2.5 inch SSD - £132

Also getting a Toshiba P300 3TB 3.5'' SATA High-Performance Hard Drive - £76

MONITOR

Any thoughts on this? Are there any areas I SHOULD improve on, or items I should avoid?

I had an original budget of £1500-£2000. I will probably spend the rest at some point on a second monitor and maybe a graphics card.

RX480 or 1060 as GPU? Might be a bit OTT if your not going to be doing much gaming, but it's cheap enough and powerful enough to enjoy a good game if you choose too.

Actually I've not even thought about that. When I built my computer about 9 years ago - that's just stopped working for good - I didn't use any fans in the case. I guess I should have some for this top spec one to get the most of of it.

Any advice on which to get and how many?

I don't mind spending a few hundred £££s on the graphics card - although after I've built the computer I can then look to buy/upgrade the graphics card.

Mmmmmm, the motherboard I've selected has on board graphics:

• 1 x DVI-D port, supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1200@60Hz*
• 1 x HDMI™ 1.4 port, supports a maximum resolution of 4096x2160@24Hz*
 
The onboard graphics ports are for using an A series cpu, dont think the rizen chips have inbilt gpu.

If you put a Ryzen APU in there (Not released yet) then you would have onboard graphics. The Ryzen 7 cpu's don't have built in graphics.
 
Drop to 16GB RAM. 2 VM's aren't going to require that much RAM, if you had an ESX environment on there it would be different juggling 5+ VM's, then 32GB is useful.

I'd also suggest a B350 board and just grabbing a USB hub if you need additional ports. One of the benefits of x370 is SLI potential which doesn't concern you. Use the money you have saved from the above to buy a 1050ti, or a 460 perhaps.
