One of the unforeseen ramifications of the AMD-ATI hookup is the new hyper-rumor-transport bus, a new technology whereby unsubstantiated rumors become fact at an alarming rate. I lamented this sad state of affairs a few weeks ago when patently false information regarding motherboard licensing was making its way around the 'net, and now we get to do it again.

Yesterday CustomPC claimed that AMD was going to scrap the ATI brand, inferring this in a most dubious manner. AMD's Gareth Cater had told them that AMD would, in fact, retain its name after the buyout was finished, meaning that AMD would remain AMD for the foreseeable future. CustomPC then assumed that this would mean that ATI as a brand was going to be dropped, reported it as such. The echo-chamber did the rest. For our part, we contacted AMD public relations folks yesterday, assuming that the story was bogus.

And alas, it is. AMD is now responding to the story, saying "AMD has no plans to drop the ATi brand name or ATi's product brands. The ATi name will live on at AMD as our leading consumer brand, and so will the Radeon brand and other ATi product brands. AMD's executive management knows very well the power and value of branding, and ATi's branding is some of the most valued in the global technology industry."

The ATI brand isn't going anywhere.

Quoted from AMD own web site ....

" Once the acquisition is closed, we will rapidly move to integrate the operations of the two companies. "

" The combined company will operate as AMD. "

" The combined company will be headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA. "

R.I.P ... ATI .... :mad:

Did you miss that satman? Many companies have brands under different names.

Car companys for example, VolksWagon make Skoda. It would be silly of AMD to get rid of the ATi name, 21years in building a name up, i would guess AMD dont want to reck a good thing in the current battle with Intel.

Yeh the fact that the two companies will become one doesn't mean amd will lose the ati name, that would be silly tbh, having an amd processor and gfx card would probably cause enough confusion to end the world as we know it anyway.

Errrrr, Porsche are independent.

As usual, when these stories break, there is very little fact in a lot of reports. Its a problem of the modern age, people add 2 and 2 together and get 5.

VAG Group comprise VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Lamborghini, Bugatti and a bit of Porsche on the side.

This is AMD Borg ,

You will be assimilated.

We will add your technological distinctiveness to our own.

* Resistance is futile * ... :D

porsche has never been independant at all - which is why Porsche designed the beetle...............and a lot more recently Porsche's and audi's have shared significant chassis parts
