AMD Opteron to 6000+

The opty is a single core.

The reason I asked the question is my 8800GTS getting hammered by World in Conflict demo, was quite surprised at it being uplayable at 1280x.
 
The OP's Opteron isn't dual core so I assume that the difference now needs to include the benefits of a dual core, although it is all academic anyway...

Ed - as you are running a 939 CPU I assume that the AMD CPU that you are suggesting is for Socket AM2, which would not fit in your board.

Even though your CPU, you think, is causing an issue with WIC demo are you basing that on the benchmark or actually playing the game...? If it is any consolation to you it seems to cause the mightiest of rigs a major performance problem, especially running the benchmark.
 
I understand I'll need a new board although my ASRock has a AM2 expansion card option.

I'm basing my findings on playing the SP mission which freezes out all the time, I guess that's down to the unoptimised demo and not my rig seeing as nothing else really phases it.
 
I wouldn't say so.

The basic chips (badged Pentium Dual Core) only have 1MB of cache and are fairly limited

You'd be better off getting an AM2 X2 at that price for a new system instead

For example, a 1.6GHz E2140 is £50. A 2.2GHz Athlon X2 4200+ is also £50 so the faster chip for the money
 
He also needs new ram. And the question is would that cheap asrock motherboard reach 3GHz? People are always saying how bad they are for overclocking, though my experience says otherwise.
 
As above, get a cheap 939 X2 and clock it

If you buying new on a budget get an X2 4200+ over an E2140. There's a reason why they're called Pentium Dual Core CPUs, not Core 2s
