AMD Opteron UP 144 San Diego 1.8GHz

Search brings up lots of threads including this one with 74 pages of Opteron overclocking.

The 144 is a very good chip for overclocking and should get to 2.5GHz easy with the right board.

or more depending on the stepping

The bottom line is, money for me atm is rather tight.
This means the only upgrade option is, new Motherboard and CPU.
I'm also limited to keeping my 6800GT agp graphics card. :(

This will be just a cheap 'get me by' option.

I'm looking at an asrock board with the opteron 144. Bad idea?

An asrock is not ideal at all as it can't push the HTT very far (240 or so which will only give you 2.166ghz or something). Most DFI boards will do it justice as will a few Asus and Abit boards. My 144 hits at least 2.8ghz, but again I am limited by the motherboard. It might go a bit higher with more voltage options and a more stable max HTT.
