I dont really game and i mostly use adobe apps but dont do video or anything and i just want the best cpu for desktop grunt, day to day stuff. Is the i5 worth the punt over a faster mhz amd phenom?

I have recently got an i7, which an i5 is based on and it was a noticeable difference over the faster clockspeed Intel Core 2 Quad I had a while back. That Core 2 Quad is supposedly about the same (give or take depending on the benchmark) than the AMD so I'd surmise that the Core i5 will be faster than the AMD Phenom II (Don't get a Phenom 1!)

The AMD will be cheaper, and from what you say you won't need the i5's power/speed anyway. However you have overclocked the CPU in your sig so I would expect you to overclock your new one?

If overclocking, go with the i5, easily. If not then the decision is a bit hardfer, though the i5 will definately give more performance.

The cpu in the sig was running at 3.2 then decided it didnt want to anymore so i run it at 2.1 stock now. I cba with the extra fans and noise so anything i overclock must be done on stock cooler. How much of a jump is an i5 over a 2.1 C2D?

Depends which generation C2D you have, the 45nm Yorkfields for example are faster than the 65nn conroe/Kentfields. Also depends on the application and how well it scales across the quad core I5. I would expect to see 5-20% performance gain in most tasks moving from a 45nm C2D to I5 or I7 at the same clock speed.

I5/I7 is only a minor retune of the core, its still basically a warmed over core 2 processor, with the main upgrades being the integrated memory controller and a better system bus.

The next refresh will be a process (32nm), and after that a major architecture refresh.

Compared to the jump between Pentium 4 and Core 2, I5/I7 are only a small evolution, who's biggest advantages are massive memory bandwidth, a high speed bus, and improved power efficiency. That said, they are still good chips, and you'll be jumping to a higher clock rate even if you stick at stock speeds. (2.66Ghz for an I5 750)

If your main applications scale exceptionally well with multiple CPU's then the hyperthreading of the I7 range gives it further benifits over I5, but for gaming not much in it yet.

I would take the I5/I7 series over a Phenom without a second thought. AMD have improved considerably, but Intel have kept the pressure up, so AMD are kinda stuck playing the "cheap value" card. Still thats a good thing, anything to keep intels prices down is good for customers.

Would i not just be better keeping my current GA_965P_S3 board and putting a decent quad core 775 socket chip in? Would the gigabyte board i have now take one of them? Something like the Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz

check the Mobo's CPU compatability list on its website, it will tell you what it can and can't take.

EDIT: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2457

your board is here but depending what rev it is depends whether or not it will take a Q9550.

Rev.1 can't take it, Rev 3.3 can with bios F13 and above however its not official support.

I my self (after never having an intel setup) am going P55/1136 but dont know if i should squeeze in a little extra budget for the i7 860 over the i5 750.
