I'm looking to build a new PC as I'm having no end of problems with my current AMD system. I can't decide whether to stay with AMD or try an Intel system as im not entirely sure of the pros and cons between them. Can someone help me with this little problem and suggest a spec I'm looking at a minimum spend of £500.

she will preferably need 1 gig of ram, a decent graphics card. atm she has agp graphics card and as they are being phased out we are wondering what to get cheap but good enough run games like counterstrike source, half-life 2 etc

The intel conroe is best at the moment. The pros are that it's faster, cooler and more overclockable. The cons are that it's Intel. I felt dirty ditching AMD and Nvidia for Intel and ATI :)

How about a 6300 conroe with a gigabyte DS3? The rest depends on how much above 500 you'd want to go

Assuming you're not dead set on using AMD, Intel is the flavour at the moment. The Core 2 Duo is just THE best chip around at the moment. Reviews also indicate even the entry model (6300) overclocks superbly well, so its great value for money.
If 500 is your min, whats your max? Also, are you planning on using bits from your current system, or getting rid of the whole thing?

At the moment Intel all the way. Buy whats best not what you are a fan of.

Quoted for the truth. I would much rather use AMD, my last Intel chip was a P3 450, but Intel have produced one stonking chip. I'm definitely planning on building a Conroe rig.

I have a lot of trust in AMD as the two Intel machines I have had resulted in issues... and I have had no issues with AMD cpus (my oldest AMD machine had Dual MP2100+ cpus and may well have given up after 6 years of hard 24/7 use). Conroes from what I have read are great... seem wonderful but in a few months time something else will come out thats better whether it be AMD or Intel again same old story really with comp hardware. So pick whatever you are a fan of if your not going to use your machine for serious overclocking.

im not really bothered about overclocking i just want a system that i can use to play games like counter-strike source and hl2. I heard that the new intel system was really good and i wanted a system that would last at least a couple of years before any major upgrades are needed. I don't seem to be having this sort of luck with AMD.

then go with intel :)

but when it does come down to it you could get a cheaper intel rather than a conroe because that is just for the die hards and you`d be wasting money especially for a system you want to last maybe 2-3 years... for games you need a good graphics card rather than a uber good processor.

I think its deffinately going to be Intel. can anyone suggest a good system looking at a P4 system or better.
