OK. Going to be upgrading my system with new motherboard, processor and RAM but doing it on the cheap really. Have been given some advice in the past to go with AMD but looking for what other people think if possible.

I am going to be wanting to go to Quad Core in the future but just starting with a bog standard dual core CPU.

Should I get this...

or this...

Any advice would be appreciated bearing in mind future upgrade-ability.

Thanks folks

AMD, there's very little to choose between AMD and Core2 offerings but S775 is dead, so you'll run out of upgrade options very quickly.

Either AM3 if you want it now, or i5 when it finally appears should be a good bet, but likely won't be significantly faster than AM3. The most likely outcome being that i5 is slightly cheaper than AM3 for the same performance, followed by swift AMD price cuts.

:-)

Thanks for tall the input guys. Everybody has pointed me towards the AMD option now so I think thats where I'll look. Lastly, is anyone able to recommend a decent AM3 cooler? Would be nice if I could use it on my current AM2 setup as well but thats not essential.

am2 coolers are am3 cooelrs no difference

Budget choice artic cooling 64

Performance choice Scythe mugen 2

Also get a 550 BE instead of a 245

Larger cache, better clocker & may even be unlockable to a quad core

Oh right ok, thats intresting. So what motherboard would i need to unlock it to a quad? Would the board I have selected allow me to do that?

That is interesting - can you expand further and perhaps suggest a good mobo as well!?
