AMD or Intel?

I'm going to buy a new CPU, although I've been told I should replace the mainboard, ram and install an AMD CPU. I currently have an i7. I want to upgrade because my CPU is five years old now and needs an upgrade, I just think it's not worth spending hundreds of £ when an i9 does the job too. What do you think? I don't know a lot about PCs so I'm just asking for some advice. Thanks.

I'm an AMD fanboy but I wouldn't discount intel completely. They're actually better value in some instances.

Wait for AMD socket AM5 next year - AMD keep their platforms for years but with Intel they change chipsets every 12 months so every time you want to upgrade your chip you have the hassle and expense of changing motherboards too

Little difference between them, AMD allow 1-2 upgrades per motherboard, Intel usually at least 1.

Whoever has the best game performance next year is what I'll go with. Best minimum fps & frame times, usually it's Intel that do better there but interested in seeing how good Zen 4 is.

AM5 boards are likely be be pretty upgradable, if AM4 new is anything to go by.

I'd wait for cheap Alder Lake boards if I was building a new PC in the next few months. I'd go with DDR5 too, probably the highest frequency that can be afforded.
