Hi all.

I desperately want to get through this game and get it completed, but I seem to be having a lot of trouble with crashes. More specifically, the game will randomly drop to a black screen in the middle of play. All the text off the screen vanishes but the monitor does not lose signal. Sound continues to play in the background.

Nothing will bring me out of it bar a complete hard power off and restart. No alt-tab, no ctrl-alt-del, no nothing.

I can't seem to specifically replicate the bug either, it's totally random but very common, often I can't play more than 5-10 minutes in a go without it happening.

The machine itself is in my sig. Nothing is over clocked, and it's completely Prime/Firestrike stable for hours, and all other games work absolutely fine.

I have tried this with every AMD driver since the game launched and all of them do the same thing, none have fixed it.

So i'm appealing to AMD users out there - have you had this bug, and if so, what can you suggest? I'd like to get the game done (maybe even with the DLC) before the next one but I just can't get around the crashing.

Thanks in advance.

[Edit] Please note it is NOT the same as this:

Mine has a complete black screen with no text and I cannot access the menus once it has happened.

BAO is extremely buggy in the first place due to the dev refusing to support it even before the Mr Freeze dlc arrived, anyway two possible fixes:

1. Leave the monitor on and unplug dvi/dp/hdmi and plug it back in.

2. Run dual monitors and extend the desktop, one should remain on.

No. 2 isn't very useful unless you run that kind of setup, but I think that's possibly why I have had next to no black screens in general.

try getting every last update, directx, netframework, visual c++ , make sure your windows is up to date, then tweek setting, maybe turn everything down/off see if it's stable, then go up step by step till you catch the setting that is screwing things up.

I'm running DP but have tried DVI with no difference.

If you don't mind me asking, have you played it with your 290? Does it run fine?

Not played much at all, maybe an hour or two at the most but it was stable, doesn't matter what output your running, but give the unplug/plugging back in a try, it might be as simple as that-it's worth a shot if it gets you through the game.

Okay, so I've gotten about half a dozen hours in via persistence. Had about half a dozen crashes in that time.

I've noticed:

- The crashes all happen when I'm in "detective mode".
- The fan on my 290 is going ballistic when it happens, with the card hitting mid-90s in temperature. Now I assumed this was normal, but it's making a hell of a racket even for a 290 stock cooler. Note that this card is Furmark and Firestrike stable - but is AO possibly giving it problems shifting heat?

How do I do that, and is it safe?

It's all running on a 450W PSU and is stable but I can't imagine there's much headroom. :)

I had the same with a 290, it was dodgy memory on the graphics card, I could benchmark all day but taxing games would do what you are getting, I haven't played AO, but it did it in thief, sleeping dogs and titanfall.

Have you tried any other demanding games?

Been playing Titanfall with no issues whatsoever. Completed Wolfenstein a couple of week back, absolutely rock solid stable.

Regularly raid on WoW with it and it's absolutely fine.

This is what's confusing me - it surely must be the game as it's rock solid on everything else. I was very careful to make sure the PSU could take it when I bought it otherwise it'd have been DSR'd for a 280X.
