AMD Phenom II or a Intel Q9550??

Very little diffrence tbh. Intel might clock a bit better if your using water cooling, but thats about it.

Prob better off looking at motherboards, decide if you like the intel ones or AMD ones.

Same performance really, I'd get the AMD one as it's using socket AM3, which is new tech and can use DDR3 ram, whereas LGA775 is dying/dead.

As stated, the Intel will have a much better chance of reaching higher stable clocks....but in terms of S775 chips, there aren't any new ones coming. If you go AM3 you may have an upgrade path in the future, not sure how long AMD plans to keep around AM3.

Se this has got me thinking..

I might go AM3, fs theres no real difference, obv DDR3 is better and i wont be clocking the cpu ever, no need.. It will suffice as it is, i had AMD 64 back in the day as that was better for gaming but im lead to belive this is no longer the case? I dont mind which i get, i aint folking out for i7 but ill pay a lil more for AM3 if it means an upgrade path, DDR3 and no difference between them and Quads..

From what I hear the Intel is generally the faster cpu (clock for clock) and better for gaming atm, but generally I'd go with the AMD in this case. More of an upgrade path and DDR3 + the higher Mhz may make up the performance difference.

Also, if you ain't overclocking, at stock I believe the phenom would just edge out the q9550.

What is your setup at the momment. Are you doing a full upgrade or not. eg my next upgrade will be a Quad. Which will then see me to the next major full upgrade. Which will be a year or so.

Last review I read was titled 'Phenom 2 gets ddr3, doesn't need it'
Higher bandwidth doesn't help if that isn't the limiting factor anywhere, and if not overclocking it's even less likely to make a difference. DDR3 may well be cheaper than DDR2 soon, which is more conclusive than higher bandwidth.

Avoiding a good socket because it's been deemed dead by various people doesn't make any sense to me at all. I've just bought a new AM2+ system, Phenom 1, because it suited the application I wanted from it. I expect it to run peacefully and without complaint for the next five years or so, and couldn't care less that people say Phenom 1 is dead in the water. It only just edged it over a X2 6000+

You know, I'm in exactly the same boat as you....actually it's more like a rusty old smaller, half sunk boat trailing far behind....

I will be upgrading from a Athlon 64 X2 4200 (939) toledo! (although OC'd to 2.6Ghz) - beat that for an upgrade! :D

It will be an ENORMOUS boost in performance, but does anyone have a link /screen print for of a 3dmark cpu score comparison between the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955, the Q9550 and my awesome beast just so I can get an idea? or perhaps some sort of comparison would be good (and amusing I'm sure). I don't even have 3dmark due to my system being utterly ancient, it would make it almost pointless.

I intend to for the AMD route for same reasons other people have said in this thread.

what will you be upgrading from?
