AMD Phenom II X2 545 CPU

My current motherboard is Foxconn A7VMX-K
Could my motherboard overclock and unlock the other 2 cores, also is this information correct?

After you perform core unlocking, the temperature sensor will fizzle and you won't know the temps without actually measuring it with a thermocouple or something.

Your CPU isn't a black edition so you have to fiddle with the Hypertransport base clock

Once you fiddle with the HT Base clock, the memory will also overclock as well.
So you might have to use memory dividers to slow it down.

Its quite often that the motherboard's controller will give up first

Look in your BIOS for a setting called ACC or Advanced Clock Calibration, set this to auto or all cores and see if it boots. Should it boot, then ideally it will become a quad core.

Can't find Advanced Clock Calibration in BIOS but have checked my motherboard Foxconn A7VMX-K specification and it has South Bridge SB700 and I don't think SB700 has ACC, I could buy a new motherboard so could I be able to unlock to quad core and gain more GHz?

Also is this statement correct?

Foxconn A7VMX-K has the SB700 south bridge chip.

SB750 = SB700 with ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration)

The SB750, SB850 south bridge chip supports an overclocking feature called “Advanced Clock Calibration” or simply ACC, allowing you to unlock hidden features from the CPU – most commonly unlocking an extra CPU core on triple-core CPUs.

just checked up for you,i dont think your board will have acc as its only the sb700, sorry, suggested motherboards, msi 770t c45 or gigabyte gama770t,ive been using the gigabyte with my 720 unlocked for 18mths or so, no problems, only thing is they are am3,ddr3 ram.

Could I get a decent motherboard that has good specifications and could unlock cores and overclock for £40?

For what you would spend on getting a m/b you may aswell just get a PII 4 Core as it is guaranteed quad core. and after spending around £60 on a M/B you might find out it wont unlock.

This would be the cheapest M/B that supports core unlocking along with 4 gb new ram as your old wouldn't work.

About the same or better speed than the Quad Core PII

I am upgrading my motherboard and RAM so I can use DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2 but I got a idea that if I get a new motherboard then why not try and unlock my AMD X2 545 to quad core and gain more GHz, I know the other 2 cores may not be unlocked or stable

Also what you have got to take into in account is on the PII platform there is little or no advantage to having DDR3

I thought DDR3 RAM would have better performance than DDR2, if it's a quad core with more GHz, will it have advantages of DDR3?

DDR3 will give you a slight advantage but not much, a PII Quad will not give you more advantage on the memory than the Dual Core.

I would save your money and go sandy bridge mabe just a celeron dual core for now then when you get the money buy something like a i5 2400 which would be much better than the PII x4.

the above suggestions by jamesfreddie has a function to allow you to unlock,if your lucky!! also ddr3 ram is cheap and gives you a certain amount of future proofing, uses less power , this would be a reasonable (and fairly cheap) upgrade for you ,if the cpu unlocks that s a bonus!

I have seen 3 different kind of DDR3 RAM, what's the differences?
