AMD Phenom II x2 550 BE Quad-Core? :S

Yes you can unlock extra core`s on the 550, though not on all of them and you must have a mobo that supports it and even if you unlock the two extra cores there is a fair chance that your system might not be stable, so you would have to run prime to ensure it`s stability.
Your cooling should not be a problem with the coolit cooler you have, if you have the right mobo, it is worth giving it a try though as you have the 550 and might get lucky.
