how does the AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 stack up against the Intel E5200 ? Is the performance equal or is the AMD faster ? Been trying to cut my build budget down. Also I hear its possible to "enable another 2 cores" does that mean the Dual core 550 is actually a quad core 550 ?

Thanks

AFAIK an X2 or X3 is just an X4 with 1/2 cores disabled - however there is no guarantee that those other cores would work because if they make an X4 and find one of the cores do not work properly, they will sell it as an X3. I'm sure some of the X2/X3 CPUs can be unlocked to 4 working cores but not all of them.

Correct^ for unlocking you will need a motherboard with SB750, over at XS seems a very high % unlock, then again maybe the ones the dont unclock dont bother posting lol:p

it's too much of a risk to take

Not really, buying a dual chip that should clock to 3.8-4.0 which will be plenty fast for games with an added bonus that it may turn out to be a £150 chip...hardly a gamble:)

100% Agree, these are great chips, love mine, soon will be upgrading motherboard to try my luck at unlocking :)

They are a native Quad Core chip with 2 cores disabled, these cores could be disabled for many reasons including, power consumption too high, they are unstable / faulty or they could just be selling more duals than quads and therefore are perfectly fine.

I'm not sure how they compare with the e5200 but would think the AMD would be the faster chip.

According to some sites it's near E8400 performance in games so it's an extremely nice budget chip.(both at stock.)

ok so which board to go with one of these want one with ddr3 for future upgradability so i can just pop a quad in later on if needed.
