Hi guys

I'm going to be upgrading to an
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 810 2.60GHz
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G
If all gos to plan;).

My mate has told me to get an
AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition
because the black edition has unlocked multipliers
and i can unlock it to an x4
sounds good to me but is it easy to unlock and what are the cons of unlocking it
 
It's a gamble. Some (most?) are tri core because one is a bit iffy. Not a bad freeby if it works though! Never done it but there's lots online about the process and the required board

Check out x3's on youtube.There's plenty of vids on there talking about unlocking the 4th core.Seems to be luck the draw if you get one that unlocks.But my x3 720 turns up today so fingers crossed.I was going to get another 940 be but thought i would save £40 and get the 720 instead.
 
3 cores are all you need at the moment unless you are video encoding.
The 720 BE chip is well priced and clocks decently, also has a chance of unlocking to quad. Personally I would choose it over the x4 810.
 
I do some video encoding !

plus theres only £20 difference

what do you think the 720 x3 will overclock to?

Check the compatibility list for the board, generally with latest bioses on recent mobos you are fine. That board is pretty new, spesh the chipset, should be fine mate :)
 
awsome thanks, ive ordered it, :-D really pleased to be going back to amd, and all the reviews of the 720 are brilliant, I got a decent aftermarket cooler too so should overclock nicely , cant wait :)
 
i hav the 720 with gigabyte gama770t, with the core unlocked makes a big difference in benchmarks, easy to unlock, just a gamble
