Anyone else got this? Do you find the default fan noise to be quite loud? It's pretty annoying.

Is there a program I can download to see temps of the processor and manually set fan speed so I can check if it is indeed that fan making the racket?

If it is, will a watercooling solution eliminate that noise completely and offer the same level/more cooling?

There is an easier way.

Open your case. If you still can't see what is making most of the noise then stop your CPU fan.

Don't need to unplug it or anything, press the centre of the fan til it stops then let go again. Prod it if it won't start respinning by itself.

Won't overheat in a few seconds.

Coretemp, realtemp, hwmonitor are some things that will show temps

Speedfan can apparently change fan speeds but dammed if it ever worked for me.

I've only been able to change fan speeds in a satisfactory way using my motherboards bundled software and the BIOS settings it has.

Last point is entirely too vague. Watercooling can mean a lot of things as can air cooling. Main thing is to get more cooling you need more fans and more airflow.

Interestingly the noise is only actually annoying because of my headphones, they block out all the low res sounds and the hi res ones which is the CPU fan get through.

I can hear the cpu fan adjusting easily with my headphones on, but not off!

Weird.

Well simply changing the cooler to a large fan air cooler will mean it is spinning at a lower RPM to achieve the same/better airflow.

That translates to a lower frequency hum.

I left my stock Phenom II cooler in the box and installed an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 which has a 92mm fan mounted to the larger heatsink with rubber pins.

Very cheap as 3rd party coolers go but much quieter and cooler than the stock brick with the 70mm fan screwed on.

This may sound like a silly question but..

Have you tried wearing your headphones with them unplugged and see if you can still hear the fan?

If you can't hear the sound without the headphones on it could be electrical interference causing the noise to be output from the headphone speakers.

No I haven't but highly doubt any interference is getting through the headphones, a breakout box is plugged into an emu1820m soundcard which is designed to block out all electrical interference. I'll try just to make sure though.

The bigger fan idea is good, have you tried the stock cooler in comparison?

Ahh thanks, so that fan should significantly reduce the noise? Are there any quieter models? I'm willing to pay more if theres any quieter ones as long as they are easy to install.

An upgrade I should get?

the one i linked is about as quiet as my psu fan, i had to keep checking the fan was moving because i was so paranoid about not hearing it lol

Awesome thanks! Bit concerned it's so cheap though, I mean it can't be that much better than the stock fan can it?

Should i buy some spare cooling paste as well, the old one might remove a bunch of it

u need to clean the old paste of anyway you get a syringe of it with that cooler, just put a small peasized blob on the middle of a the cleaned cpu and stick the cooler on.

the cooler is a lot bigger than the standard one and comes with a much bigger fan but its a low rpm ran so its very quiet.

cool and quiet wont make a difference the noise is when you start doing stuff as soon as 2-3 cores get loaded the stock fans fly upto something crazy like 5000-6000 RPM and sounds like a hairdryer

defin' your processor fan I had the same prob with amd 955 black edition , changed the heatsink and fan to artic freezer extreme and the noise is gone.

Awesome guys thanks!

Just ordered the:

Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366)

Fan, arriving tommorow. Looking forward to reduced noise :) After playing a game, the fan spins hard for a long time after as it cools down which is annoying if I want to listen to music, it really is loud!

amd processor are so slow. i had 1 years back an did not like it. very sluggish performance.

post of the decade?

installs the same as the default amd one , only put a pea sized dot of the paste that comes with it on the centre of the cpu, the heatsink will spread it out when you put it on

Did anyone else have trouble fitting the stock heatsink on originally? It was really really hard for me to get the hooks on. I was scared I'd snap the mobo

the bit you have to turn to lock it in place was very tight, its was really loose on my A50

japanese or whatever demonstration of how to install the A70 (a50 is exactly the same just slightly smaller) (but he doesnt put thermal paste on the cpu because hes just showing how it goes on you will need to put a small pea sized blob on the centre of the cpu)
