hi people:D

got this strange problem when i unlock the cpu to a 4 core

i unlocked it and when i restarted my pc where it tells me to press del to enter setup i see x4 that wasent there before

also when i check my computer properties it says something like amd phenom x4 955 also i use cpuz thats says my cpu is amd phenom ii x4

but i go to task manager and i only see 2 cores also i run Fritz Chess Benchmark thing and that only finds 2 cores aswell

just wondering if any can explain:confused:

my mobo is Asus Crosshair III Formula AMD 790FX if that helps

thanks

If Windows was installed as a dual core, it sometimes sets the maximum number of cores for the operating system as 2. You can alter this in msconfig but I can't remember exact details.

msconfig > Aoot > Advanced options... > Set number of CPUs

Also, I have seen Windows needing the CPU entry in device manager uninstalled and reinstalled using the Search for hardware changes option.

ok when i go to ms config on boot advanced i can select cores but i only see 2 cores

heres what i do go to cpu config in my bios

advance clock calibration [all cores] tried auto aswell

unleashing mode [enable]

active cpu cores [4 core operation]

my cpu shows up as AMD Phenom II x4 b55 in system properties also if i go to device manager and click on processors it drops down and shows me 4

am i doing it right

Does CPU-Z show all four cores, as shown in the bottom of this screenshot?

CPU-Z-1.png

changed setting active cpu cores [4 core operation] to active cpu cores [3 core 0,1,2] windows starts up fine run cpu-z i see 3 cores & 3 threads

does this mean the 4th core is defective ill try again on 4 cores see what happens

e2a just changed active cpu cores [3 core 0,1,2] to,active cpu cores [3 core 0,1,3] and it freezes at the starting windows screen

May have been deactivated for a reason :( don't know too much about amd unlocking but the CPU may need some more voltage to be stable. Some will only be stable on 3 cores, some won't unlock and stay stable at all

just set acc to auto

and changed back to active cpu cores [3 core 0,1,2] seems to run fine with th 3 cores activated woo hooo i see 3 cores in task manager aswell :)

think ill leave as is for now thanks for the help

Same thing happened with my old Athlon X2 5000+ 45nm (now on MM). One core had substandard l1 or l2 cache. I was using a motherboard that didn't allow selective core unlocking so it was all or nothing. Should be perfect on a board that allows unlocking to x3.

Turning off CnQ and raising voltages got the CPU stable enough to boot into Windows, game and blend (any stability test I throw at it really) as a quad though.

By comparison my current X2 5200+ 45nm runs perfectly as a quad on stock volts.
