hi everyone, i have the above processor mounted on a ECS GF8100VM-M5 motherboard. with 3gb 800mhz ram, i also have an nvidia 7300gs graphics card.

is this a good platform to begin overclocking?
it was an original compaq build pc with an amd sempron 3200+. i got the mobo bundle last year and have alwys fancied a bit of oc but have been confused / scared

would it be wise to upgrade my psu? it is a 300w bog standard thing

the idle temp is currently 45c but i need a better cpu fan, so recommendations are welcome

also is it possible to unlock the 4th core with this processor.

thanks in advance,

confused newbie, :D

The motherboard and CPU are probably not a good combination for overclocking. The motherboard also only supports 95W TDP processors and the X3 8450 is a 95W TDP processor.

Your RAM is running overclocked ATM meaning this is also limiting your overclock.

OTH,the motherboard does support the newer 45NM Athlon II and Phenom II processors meaning you have an upgrade path:

It means you can plonk in a 3GHZ Phenom II X4 945 in your motherboard at a later date.

BTW,how many sticks of RAM are you using??

What company makes your PSU??

Thanks for the reply, why would my RAM be clocked i haven't done anything to it? Is this something in the BIOS setting to do it automatically?

i have 2 sticks in , 2gb and a 1gb. it only has two slots for ram in this version of the motherboard.

would i be better getting a phenom II then?

the PSU is a HIPRO model HP-D3057F3P.

it's getting on for 5 years old now.

I have the same board as you with a phenom x3 8250e, I thought it might be worth mentioning that its on the list of boards that support the new amd hex core chips (requires bios update)

http://www.ecs.com.tw/extra/6core/index.html

I have OCd to 2.2ghz but this is my first OC ever and I am realy not sure what I am doing

thanks for your reply, i'm not sure either. the beginners guide seems more like an intermediate guide to me

i want to learn, but need to start with the basics...

have you updated your BIOS?

i've thought about it however i don't want to brick my pc

No I am too scared to update the bios too.

What I did was in advanced setup put the HT frequency on 1600 and disabled amd c&c

In advanced chipset setup i put the DRAM freq down to 633mhz

In frequency/voltage control I put cpu frequency ctrl on manual and then upped the default cpu frequency a little bit at a time, booting and stress testing each time i increased it.
When I got the default cpu frequency to 232mhz my ht frequncy and ram freq were around what they should be at stock speeds. I would have gone further but I am running on the stock cooler plus a couple of case fans and it was getting a bit hot.

I couldnt see anyway of bringing the northbridge freq down or putting more volts in the cpu. (edit: I see in the motherboard manual now 'note: for phenom cpus, the board does not support cpu voltage control function.)

Like I said though, this is my first time trying anything like this and I realy don't know if I did it right, but it seemed to work.

Hope that helps you, have fun.

i flashed my BIOS this morning, when i rebooted i had an error message about my DRAM timings.

it said it was going to reset them...... i haven't touched them so what's that all about?
