I am going to purchase an AMD Phenom X3 8750 and I am wondering whether it would be possible for me to unlock the 4th core on this model of processor with the right motherboard also will the unlocking options be available with this motherboard Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H 785G Socket AM3 DVI VGA HDMI Out 8 Channel Audio MATX Motherboard (tried to link it, kept on putting asterisks on the website name :( ) and if I do unlock the 4th core would I have to purchase extra cooling? Thank you very much

I would probably would look at the Athlon II X3 425 for around £54 delivered from a well known retailer.

In many instances the Athlon II 2.9GHZ X3 435 can beat the Phenom X4 2.6GHZ X4 9950:

Hence I would consider that the 2.7GHZ Athlon II X3 425 would be faster than the Phenom X3 8750. Also the Athlon II would consume less power and has the chance to be unlocked to an Athlon II X4 or in some very rare cases a Phenom II X3 or X4.

The Athlon II X3 425 unlocked to an Athlon II X4 would be fine with the stock cooler.

hmmmm never knew about that would the Athlon II X3 work in an am3 board? also the Phenom X3 8750 would not be able to unlocked? also can you explain to me why the Athlon II X3 425 is faster than the Phenom eventhough the Phenom is a newer architecture? and how would an Athlon II X4 compare with a Phenom II X3 or X4

Would u suggest I go for the Athlon II X3 and unlock the fourth core and overclock to around 3Ghz I am looking for a computer which will just load programs up fast and be able to multi task such as running a virus scan while football manager 2010 is running and a bit of Photoshop on the side and also will this processor bottleneck a 5770 and another question would this be ok for Flight simulator X as my current system is quite poor

The Phenom 8750 is an older architecture than the Athlon II as the latter is derived from the Phenom II. The Phenom 8750 is also based on a 65NM process and will consume more power than the 45NM Phenom II and Athlon II at the same clockspeed.

Also unlocking is not guaranteed for any processor as you may get when in which the locked core is faulty.

What is the maximum budget for the CPU??
