AMD Phenom X4 9850

If your mobo supports it, you might as well if you're looking for an upgrade.
The 9850 is not a bad CPU, it'll be a boost from what you have and aslong as you watch the cooling, there shouldn't be any problems.

Its more hassle but its better to sell your mobo and CPU. The money you get will be enough for an Athlon X4 and an AM2+ motherboard.

Hell, you could sell the DDR2 for a good price, get an AM3 mobo and DDR3 and be completely up to date and have compatbility for future hex cores.

AM2 is not worth it IMO, and at that price the processor is expensive i think.

I am really sure that cpu is AM2+ only, i am running one now but i am just to lazy to put my AMD PII 720 BE back it.

EDIT: looking at the price they are asking for the cpu i would not touch with a 10ft pole
