AMD is preparing its first set of Sempron processors based on the DDR3 supportive AM3 package. The first one, codenamed "Sargas" is a single-core chip that comes across as a single-core variant of the Athlon II X2 "Regor". It features a broad 3.6 GT/s HyperTransport 3.0 system interface, 128 KB of L1 and 1 MB of L2 cache, a dual-channel DDR2/DDR3 memory interface, an up-to-date AMD feature and instruction-set including AMD64, SSE4A, and AMD-V.

Sargas is built on Global Foundries' 45 nm SOI process, and has an operating voltage range of 0.85 ~ 1.35 V. The first SKU based on this core is the Sempron X1 140 (model: SDX140HBGQBOX). It has a clock speed of 2.70 GHz, and a bus multiplier of 13.5x. At that speed, its TDP is rated at 45W. It will be available towards the end of this week, priced around 35 Euro.

Yeah, i've been researching this today too. But i don't really see the market for it. Sure, it's cheap, but you can get a decent dual core for that price and a brilliant one for a little more. It has a low TDP of 45W, but if that's what you're after then you'd get something like this.

I'm sure there's somewhere it would fit in, but i can't figure it out. Anyone?

But the question remains... why? Overclocking? Nothing particularly special about it. Performance? It's a single core. Price? Cheap, but you can get dual core's for that price.

I dont get why AMD are releasing Semprons while the have the Athlon II's coming out too:confused: They are starting to get as bad as Intel with the Celeron Dual Core, Pentium Dual Core, Core 2, etc.

Unlocking dual cores? That's just a whole new level of confusion. They're going to be crippled dual cores? I don't get that. Most dual core's a crippled quads... so if this was a €35 quad core...

How do you know? And that must mean that they're crippled Athlon II X2's, because they're the only true dual cores they make any more, and have a DDR3 memory controller.

That's just the point though. It's not. The proper dual cores are still dirt cheap and are a better option. And AMD aren't selling this for it to be unlocked. They're strongly against unlocking, because every CPU that gets unlocked is a CPU they don't sell at a higher price.

why would a office machine want DDR3 -.- well I can take into account that DDR3 runs at a lower voltage

cos thats why you buy this type of CPU for office use imo

If you saved say £10 a year or even £5 a year on all the new pcs using DDR3 instead of DDR2, you would make that choice, especially with a fleet of computers.
