Amd Price cuts

Some people have saved up for months for one of these. I for one am one of them. I based my decision on getting one purely on the fact that I can't play AAAA games like BF3 they way I want to. All I want it 1080P everything maxed out and the FPS not to go below 60, the GTX680 will do this easily hence my purchase. The GTX680 will last me for at least 2 years on its own before I'd think about SLI, £420 over two years isn't much in the grand scheme of things. It's not like I'm buying a £420 jacket that I'll only wear on special occasions. I'll be using my GTX680 everyday.

Also I'm selling my 5850s so I'll get some money back too. If you look at it this way it's not as astonishing as you think.

That's fair enough, but as far as new generations go this one has demanded the biggest increase in expenditure for the smallest performance increase since the 3000/8000 series, maybe even earlier. The cards are decent, and I agree that the price for something you use everyday is palatable, but you're still paying 40-50% more than you should be.

So basically HD7870 level performance for around £240.

Im not talking about upcoming mid range cards, I'm talking about the currently overpriced and renamed mid range GTX 680.

Nvidia are free to adjust their future GPU lines as they see fit, but the GK104 was never meant to have been a contender for the fastest GPU this generation.

Its seriously embarrassing for AMD that the GK104 performs just as well as, if even better than their flagship 7970.

How much was the GTX280 at launch? Or the GTX480? GTX580? Do people really lose their mamory come new GPU time?

The launch price of the GTX 280 was different, because ATI's cards were released afterwards and that forced Nvidia's prices down by a huge amount. But now that both companies have released their top of the line single GPU cards at such a similar prices with very similar performance it's likely neither will end up coercing the other to dramatically reduce prices.

The GTX 480 and 580 are poor examples because Nvidia has always charged silly amounts for their top of the line cards, but this generation has seen prices across the board go up vastly. I'm talking about the entire range, not just the flagship cards that have always fetched a disproportionate premium over the rest of the range (e.g. X1900 XTX, 8800 Ultra, etc etc).

I would say when the 2nd generation Kepler and GCN parts are released towards the end of the year or early next year. Then the GK104 will probably be the midrange.

However, this makes one big assumption though, that the GK110 arrives as the GTX780.

It could be quite possible that the GK110 is launched at a higher tier than the GTX680,especially if production is limited and most are pushed as high margin Quadro and Tesla SKUs.

TBH,I don't really care about whether AMD is embarrassed or not as it is a metric which is not going to help me,unless each company wants to compete better with each other on price. I have the feeling that they just want to keep a status quo going so not to cut too deeply into each others margins.

The GTX580,GTX570,GTX560TI,HD6970 and HD6950 prices were remarkably stable until the last month. That is well over a year.

NV will release a dual 680 before releasing the "780."

AMD are soon releasing the 7990, touted for April (according to the rumourmill.)

The price drop may already have happened, I just snapped up a couple of 7950s at £313.65 a pop with free Saturday delivery! :)

ASUS DirectCU II TOP versions too, none of that reference nonsense. :p

If a much better deal comes along in the next week I can always send them back but that smells like a pretty good deal to me! :D

What we needed was Nvidia to release this card at sub 7970 prices offering similar performance at a cheaper price say £350 at launch. Then we would have had an interesting couple of weeks ahead to see how AMD reacted.

What I will never understand is how/why anyone chooses to pigeon hole themselves in one camp or another. When you buy a card you pay for the one that offers the best bang for your buck at the time. Its like kindergarten reading some of the replies.

they've been at that price for a week or so now.

I agree with CAT-THE-FIFTH and Marine-RX179 this gen has been a massive disappointment for me. Never has last gen's GPUs seemed so attractive especially at £180 for a 6950 and they're only bound to get cheaper. What makes it better is you're not going to be missing out on much performance either by opting for one of the older cards.

169.99 now

Thanks for the heads up. I have just placed my order :) I'm getting my birthday present on Thursday of 3x U2312HMs (they're here, but the missus won't give me them until my birthday.)

To connect the third monitor the easiest way is to use either:

a) a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter and a DisplayPort cable or
b) a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

The Club3D website doesn't state that a miniDP to DP adapter is supplied.

The Dell website doesn't state that a DP cable is supplied.

Perhaps you should ask your wife to see if there is a DP cable included with the monitors.

Well G/F not wife, anyway, it doesn't come with one as we ordered three of these U2312HM displays for work when we were attending BETT at the start of the year.

I guess I'll be getting a cable, however, I'm waiting for my birthday money to come through from people, as I'm going to use it to contribute towards a 256GB M4 SSD, that way I could always chuck the cable on the same order.

If I remember rightly, is the HDMI output just a split/share of one of the DVI outputs? I only ask as I have an HDMI/DVI converter and an HDMI/DVI cable. :) (I'm going to go away and check now and update this post with an edit.)

Edit: Yeah, the HDMI shares with one of the DVI interfaces. No adaptor in the package so I'm likely just to get a DP/mDP cable.

Posted the link yesterday.

I maintain. Tahiti = Fermi. Very expensive to make.

Kepler 104 = Not Fermi, cheaper to make.
